Williams sets Grey Cup record with 97-yard punt return TD

CALGARY — Calgary Stampeders returner Terry Williams set a new Grey Cup record on Sunday night in Edmonton, returning a punt 97 yards for a touchdown in the 106th Grey Cup presented by Shaw.

Chris Wright’s return of 82 yards with the Baltimore Stallions in 1995 marked the previous record.

Williams’ record-breaking romp extended Calgary’s lead over the Ottawa REDBLACKS to 21-11, as he dashed past punter Richie Leone and crossed the goal line with just one second left.

Williams was inserted as the Stampeders’ primary return man and change of pace running back following an injury to Romar Morris in the Western Final. The 26-year-old had three punt return touchdowns during the regular season.

The five longest punt returns in Grey Cup history are as follows:

Terry Williams 97 CGY 2018
Chris Wright 82 BAL 1995
