EDMONTON — They were teammates as players in Edmonton, and then again in Toronto when Jason Maas was a coach.

The relationship between retiring quarterback Ricky Ray and current Eskimos head coach Maas has always been a unique one, as the quarterback duo helped the Green and Gold win two Grey Cups in the span of three years from 2003 to 2005.

On Wednesday, after 16 prolific seasons in the CFL, Ray announced his retirement. Maas congratulated his former teammate in a statement issued by the Edmonton Eskimos:

“Ricky is a four-time Grey Cup champion, the all-time passing leader for two storied franchises. By any account, he had an unbelievable career. The best part is, he’s an even better person, teammate, and friend. All the best to him and his family in retirement!”
