Crazy Canada Day: Remembering a pair of CFL contests

With this year’s Argos-at-Riders Canada Day showdown looming large, we figured it’s the perfect time to go into the vault and revisit two of the craziest Canada Day CFL games ever.

Montreal at Ottawa | July 1, 2005

Everything about this comeback is perfect, the nostalgia powerful.

From the legendary Kerry Joseph leading Ottawa on a 23-point fourth quarter comeback, to cameos from the likes of Obby Khan and then-Als defensive coordinator Chris Jones and bespectacled Ottawa kicker Matt Kellett’s walkoff, it’s perfect.

Fans looking to watch Anthony Calvillo in his prime can also do that during the first three quarters.

The Ottawa Renegades had a middling history at best, going 23-49 over their four seasons, but on Canada Day 2005 they gave us a comeback for the ages.

Montreal at Saskatchewan | July 1, 2010

This game had quite literally everything.

From Anthony Calvillo eclipsing the 300-touchdown mark with the Alouettes, to S.J. Green’s ridiculous catch at the back of the end zone and some of Darian Durant’s finest-ever work.

There were touchdown returns, big-name players making big impacts and of course (sorry, Sask fans): This was the much-anticipated rematch of the 2009 Grey Cup.

Simply put, the kind of game nobody in attendance will ever forget.
