Cody Fajardo bounces back in win over Lions

REGINA — Cody Fajardo used his passing and rushing skills to lift the Saskatchewan Roughriders over the BC Lions in Week 6, racking up 331 combined yards and three total touchdowns in the 38-25 home victory.

Fajardo bounced back from a disappointing performance in Saskatchewan’s one-sided loss against the Calgary Stampeders, a game that saw him throw a pair of interceptions and no touchdowns. The 27-year-old quarterback led three consecutive touchdown drives in the second half against the Lions.

“We did a great job of rallying after half-time, making the corrections,” Fajardo told TSN after the win. “The coaches called a great game for me and helped me get back to being comfortable.”

Fajardo completed 17 of 23 passes for 278 yards and two touchdowns while also carrying the football eight times for 53 yards and a touchdown. Fajardo came through with multiple big plays against BC, including a 39-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kyran Moore and a 50-yard touchdown bomb to receiver Shaq Evans that helped seal the victory in the fourth quarter.

Saskatchewan has now improved its record to 2-3 after dropping the first two games of the season, and Fajardo knew that getting things back on track with a win against the Lions was an important step in the right direction.

“I think it’s huge, especially because we had to sit on a loss for three weeks now with that bye week,” Fajardo said. “But I think it was a great team win for us. The defence played outstanding, receivers once again made a lot of contested catches, offensive line did a great job protecting, and on special teams we got a kick return by Thiggy which really sparked us offensively as well.”

The Saskatchewan Roughriders will face off with the BC Lions again next week on July 27th in Vancouver.

“They’re going to be hungry, and they’re going to be ready to go next week and defend their home,” Fajardo said. “We got to get after it in the film and get better and go from there.”
