Prediction time: CFL.ca writers make their Week 7 picks

Jimmy Jeong/CFL.ca

TORONTO — Heading into a full slate of action in Week 7, there are some lopsided picks on the board.

The CFL.ca writers have picked unanimously in favour of the Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Eskimos, and Saskatchewan Roughriders this week.

In the marquee matchup of the week between the Hamilton Tiger-Cats and Winnipeg Blue Bombers, however, the voting was a little different – it’s the Bombers who are getting the slight edge.

Here are the CFL writer picks for Week 7.

Total CFL Pick ‘Em is back in 2019 with weekly and season-long prizes to those who can pick ’em best (View rules and regulations, including prizing).

CGY at OTT

In our first matchup of Week 7, we see a clear cut winner in the Stampeders, who will make a trip to the nation’s capital to play Ottawa on Thursday.

REDBLACKS quarterback Dominique Davis will be sat out for a second consecutive week due to injury. That’ll give Jonathon Jennings another shot to make up for a difficult outing in Week 6. He threw for 45 yards on the night and was replaced by backup Will Arndt in the fourth quarter.

Calgary has won three of its last four games, with the latest victory coming at the hands of the Argos in Week 6. Nick Arbuckle had a difficult time against Toronto, but he should fare better against Ottawa on Thursday. Additionally, Ka’Deem Carey has established himself as the team’s lead back and Juwan Brescacin, Eric Rogers, and Reggie Begelton have formed a great trio of receiving options. The defence also has 12 sacks and as many picks, so the Stamps will be itching to get after Jennings.

TOR at EDM

Toronto will finish off their third leg of their Western road trip on Thursday when they take on the Eskimos at Commonwealth Stadium.

The Eskimos will be without star running back C.J. Gable and receiver DaVaris Daniels due to injury. As a result, Shaq Cooper and Kenny Stafford will be moving up in the depth chart. Trevor Harris will be aiming to bounce back from a rough Week 6 by picking on a Toronto defence that has shown the ability to give up a ton of yards through the air.

Toronto is still searching for its first win on the year. The Argos will have a chance against a banged-up Esks squad. The team has scored the least amount of points around the league and McLeod Bethel-Thompson is coming into this game after throwing four interceptions against Calgary in Week 6.

WPG at HAM

In what could be a look ahead to the 2019 Grey Cup, the undefeated Blue Bombers will travel to Tim Hortons Field for a showdown with the Ticats.

Hamilton is coming off a bye week but in their previous game against Calgary, they rolled to a 30-23 victory. Jeremiah Masoli is completing 70 percent of his passes, Brandon Banks leads the league in receiving yards with 506, and the Tabbies`defence is second in the league in sacks (18).

The Bombers are off to their first 5-0 start to a campaign since 1960, and everything has gone right for them. Matt Nichols has a 129.1 efficiency rating, which is tops among all starting quarterbacks. Andrew Harris is also putting in an MVP-worthy campaign and Lucky Whitehead is tearing it up on the offensive side as well as special teams.

There will be some fireworks between two teams of this quality.

SSK at BC

In the second half of a home-and-home series, BC is essentially looking to keep its season on track.

The Lions currently sit at 1-5 on the year, but their lone win came against the winless Argos. BC’s offence has had some real trouble producing as of late, due in part to the offensive line, which has allowed 21 sacks on the year. Head coach DeVone Claybrooks says he’s still trying to get all the pieces to mesh together, and the team will start to become one with every passing game.

Saskatchewan is coming off a win over the Lions in Week 6. They managed to put up 38 points in the victory while getting a standout performance from Cody Fajardo. Charleston Hughes also had a massive game on the defensive end, finishing with 10 tackles, three sacks, and two forced fumbles.

BC will be in “do-or-die” mode on Saturday, as they’ll need to win in front of their home crowd to avoid yet another loss.
