Fantasy Status Report: Tasker out, Coombs to start for Ticats

Geoff Robins/CFL.ca

TSN CFL Fantasy presented by LeoVegas is easy for any fan to play, with just seven roster spots and a $40,000 salary cap.

However, success does require a healthy team, with all seven players in active CFL lineups. With such small rosters, an empty slot can be a devastating blow to your week’s score.

In addition, practice reports can be the source of hidden gems that produce big numbers despite low ownership percentage, providing an edge over the rest of the field.

With that, CFL.ca breaks down some of the critical roster notes for each game.

Winnipeg at Edmonton
Friday | 9:00 p.m. ET

Andrew Harris, RB, WPG

Bombers head coach Mike O’Shea says running back Andrew Harris ($11,289) ‘should be good’ to play Friday night against the Eskimos. Harris sat out the end of a Week 10 win over BC with an apparent leg injury, but is listed as the team’s starter on the official depth chart.

Matt Nichols, QB, WPG

The Bombers announced this week that Matt Nichols ($8,170) will miss at least the next 4-6 weeks after suffering an upper body injury vs. BC last week. Chris Streveler ($6,600) will start in his place.

Darvin Adams, WR, WPG

Receiver Darvin Adams ($7,178) will remain sidelined this week. Adams hasn’t played since Week 7 vs. the Ticats.

Chris Streveler, QB, WPG

With Nichols out for the foreseeable future, Chris Streveler ($6,600) will be the Bombers’ starting quarterback this week vs. Edmonton. Streveler has had mixed reviews early in his career, but offers Fantasy upside thanks to his ability to run.

Ottawa at Saskatchewan
Saturday | 7:00 p.m. ET

Dominique Davis, QB, OTT

REDBLACKS QB Dominique Davis ($6,531) is in line to start Saturday vs. Saskatchewan. Davis was benched for part of a loss to Hamilton last weekend, but has taken first-team reps with new play-caller Joe Paopao overseeing the offence.

Mossis Madu, RB, OTT

Veteran running back Mossis Madu ($6,457) will not play for the REDBLACKS this week with John Crockett ($4,897) returning. Madu carried the ball nine times for 55 yards in a loss to Hamilton but is settling into a reserve role in Ottawa.

Jonathon Jennings, RB, OTT

Jonathon Jennings ($5,150) will remain a backup when Ottawa visits Regina for a Week 11 clash. He attempted six passes while Dominique Davis ($6,531) was benched last weekend, but Davis has handled first-team reps in practice this week.

John Crockett, RB, OTT

John Crockett ($4,897) will return to the starting lineup this week at running back for the REDBLACKS. Crockett’s return could give Fantasy players a cost-effective RB2 option vs. the Riders.

Hamilton at BC
Saturday | 10:00 p.m. ET

Luke Tasker, WR, HAM

The Ticats have placed Luke Tasker ($6,726) on the one-game injured list. The veteran receiver has gotten off to a slow start this season, totaling 292 yards on 26 catches with no touchdowns. He’ll be replaced in the lineup by Jalin Marshall ($2,500).

Cameron Marshall, RB, HAM

Running back Cameron Marshall ($5,505) is listed as the backup to Anthony Coombs ($4,346) this week. This may not bear any significance at all, as Coombs isn’t known as a between-the-tackles runner and Marshall should still get his touches in the Ticats’ offence. Still, it’s worth keeping in mind.

Anthony Coombs, WR, HAM

The Ticats list Anthony Coombs ($4,346) as their starting running back for Saturday’s game vs. BC. This may not change much from a workload perspective, but if Coombs does see more playing time, his pass-catching skills could make him a valued asset.

Nikola Kalinic, WR, HAM

Ticats rookie receiver/fullback Nikola Kalinic ($2,500) is expected to return to the lineup this weekend. It’s great news for the Ticats’ offence, but he still won’t appeal much to Fantasy users with just five catches for 49 yards and a touchdown in seven games.

Jalin Marshall, WR, HAM

With Tasker sidelined, Jalin Marshall ($2,500) is in the lineup for the Ticats this week. Marshall has played three games but has not yet caught a pass. He could make an impact against a struggling BC team.

Montreal at Toronto (Moncton, N.B.)
Sunday | 12:00 p.m. ET

James Wilder Jr., RB, TOR

While Argos running back James Wilder Jr. ($9,400) returned to practice this week, his role for Sunday’s game is a mystery. Wilder was a scratch last week vs. the Eskimos.

Branden Burks, RB, TOR

While the Argos continue to split their backfield duties between Branden Burks ($3,683) and Chris Rainey ($6,288), the status of James Wilder Jr. ($9,400) could complicate things. Fantasy players are advised to check the depth chart before committing to any Argos running back.

William Stanback, RB, MTL

According to reports out of Montreal, William Stanback ($8,948) has practised this week and could return to the lineup when the team travels to Moncton. He could be eased back to work, inviting a possible split with Jeremiah Johnson ($6,128) and a potential headache for Fantasy players.

Jeremiah Johnson, RB, MTL

It’s expected that Jeremiah Johnson ($6,128) will play in Week 11, though his workload will depend on the availability of injured running back William Stanback ($8,948). Johnson had his first 100-yard rushing game of the season in a win over the Stamps last week.
