Stamps sign Dexter McCoil to practice roster

CALGARY — The Calgary Stampeders have signed linebacker Dexter McCoil to the team’s practice roster.

McCoil, 28, is a two-year CFL veteran, having previously played for the Edmonton Eskimos from 2014-15. He signed with the team ahead of the 2014 campaign following a stint with the Los Angeles Kiss of the Arena Football League.

In his rookie year, McCoil appeared in all 18 games for the Esks, recording 63 tackles, four sacks, two interceptions, and a pair of defensive touchdowns. That led to him being named both the West Division and the league’s Most Outstanding Rookie at the end of the 2014 season.

McCoil was a West Division All-Star in each of his season’s and was named a CFL All-Star in 2014. He captured his first Grey Cup with the Eskimos in 2015.

In early 2016, he signed a contract with the Chargers. He’d feature in all 16 games that season, getting 25 tackles and an interception. He would be waived by the organization a year after signing. He’d make his way to the 49ers, featuring on their practice roster before being released again.

Collegiately, McCoil played four seasons at Tulsa where he played 51 games and made 44 starts for the Golden Hurricane. He amassed 315 total tackles including 10 tackles for loss, 25 pass breakups, 18 interceptions — including one returned for a touchdown — and one forced fumble. He was named to the Conference USA all-freshman team in 2009 and second-team all-Conference USA in 2011. McCoil was named first-team all-Conference USA as a senior in 2012 as the Golden Hurricane won the Conference USA title.

The Stampeders will be back in action on Friday when they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers to open Week 20. The two teams are set to kick-off at 8:30 p.m. ET.
