Esks’ Diego Viamontes becomes first global player to start

LFA

EDMONTON — Mexican receiver Diego Viamontes was been listed as a starter for the Edmonton Eskimos on Saturday as the Green and Gold closed out the regular season versus Saskatchewan.

Viamontes sloted in for Ricky Collins Jr., who sat out of the Eskimos regular season finale, and became the first Global player to start in a CFL game.

Although he didn’t make a catch, he finished the day with three kickoff returns for 44 yards and also had a pair of missed field goal returns for 44 yards.

The receiver, who played in Mexico’s Liga de Futbol Americano Professional (LFA), was selected first overall by the Eskimos in the first-ever CFL-LFA Draft that took place in January.

Viamontes, a five-foot-10, 189-pound pass-catcher, appeared in his first CFL game in Week 18 against the BC Lions but did not record a stat. He has spent the rest of the season on the team’s practice roster.

Kickoff between the Eskimos and Roughriders is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET on Saturday afternoon.
