Stamps’ Ross Folan honoured with Jane Mawby Award

CALGARY –The Calgary Stampeders’ Director of Video Operations, Ross Folan, has been named the first recipient of the Jane Mawby Tribute Award at the 2019 Shaw CFL Awards in Calgary.

The award is presented annually to a highly-valued, yet too often ‘unsung’ current employee at the club and league level.

The new award is named in honour of the late Jane Mawby who spent 28 years working behind the scenes for the Stampeders. She most recently served as Director of Football Administration before her untimely passing in 2015 after a battle with cancer. Conceived by the Ladies of the Calgary Stampeders who had the privilege of working alongside Mawby, the award was created to acknowledge her significant impact on the organization.

At the evening ceremony, the team’s President and General Manager, John Hufnagel, presented the honour to Folan.

“Jane and Ross worked together for over 20 years and it’s fitting to see him receive this tremendous honour,” said Hufnagel. “Jane inspired so many members of our Stampeder family and I can see her determination, character and leadership in Ross. We’re so grateful for his commitment and passion for our organization.”

Mawby’s son, Matthew, was unable to attend the evening, but reflected on the award through a heartfelt message on behalf of his family.

“I’m sure that my mother would have loved to know that an award such as this was named after her. She worked tirelessly for the Stamps for many years. Making a team work requires more than just good players and coaches. Too often, people like my mother – the invisible, but essential elements – go unnoticed. Tonight however, that ended.

“Tonight we celebrated the accomplishments and efforts of the unspoken heroes who make everything come together behind the scenes. I’m glad that her name will forever stand for the dedication and excellence that she always represented.”

The nine CFL member clubs and the league head office each nominated one long-standing employee and a selection committee comprised of three team presidents determined that Folan’s 27 years of dedicated service garnered the inaugural award.

“Ross Folan is not only a special member of the Calgary Stampeders, but also a terrific ambassador for our game,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie. “Ross represents the hundreds of dedicated individuals from across the country whose commitment and incredible efforts breathe life into the CFL and make our league possible.”
