The Weekly Say: Sharing Fantasy tips

GoElks.com

TORONTO — CFL Fantasy is back with a new look and a few new features for 2023.

There’s a captain feature, which lets a player of your choosing on your roster receive double points. There’s a Champions League, which takes the weekly top-30 overall scorers and enters them into a four-week competition, that starts in Week 18. For the absent-minded fantasy professors, there’s a roster autocomplete to save you from the goose egg that could spiral you out of the race, whether you’re in a private league with friends or chasing the overall top score.

As you start to fill out your rosters and chase the numerous prizes up for grabs (a total cash value of $25,000 and a trip to the 110th Grey Cup in Hamilton) this year, CFL.ca’s writers have pooled some thoughts together on captain-worthy players, top producers and more. With kickoff just over a week away, you’ve got time to make all of the necessary decisions to start your season off on the right foot.

Which player do you think will be most captain-worthy this season?

Jamie Nye: Ka’deem Carey. He should get 20 touches a game for the Stamps, with the ability to catch out of the backfield.

Kristina Costabile: Can I say all quarterbacks? Most times my highest point-getter is a quarterback (you see I said most and not always, because sometimes QBs have low point games too!) but if I can double their total each week, that could be a difference maker!

Marshall Ferguson: Bo Levi Mitchell. Ticats are going to throw the ball A LOT and Bo has much to prove.

Don Landry: Zach Collaros. You’ll pay a lot for him, so make it even more worth your while by doubling up. Winnipeg’s receiving corps is stacked. Stuh-acked. Collaros might well set a single season personal record for touchdown passes thrown. And I say that knowing full well that he threw 37 last season.

Chris O’Leary: He’s in new surroundings this year, but I still think Eugene Lewis is a safe bet as a captain. Doesn’t matter who his quarterback is, doesn’t matter if he’s the only option or one part of a loaded corps, he finds ways to produce.

Who have been your top producing players in years past?

Frankie Hickson was a dependable running back option last year for the Roughriders (The Canadian Press)

Nye: Running backs that get a lot of action in the pass game. Actually the Riders’ running backs were solid last year, as Jamal Morrow and Frankie Hickson got consistent touches.

Costabile: What makes CFL Fantasy so fun, and sometimes really difficult, is it’s very matchup based. A different player can produce big fantasy numbers every week. With that in mind, last year my quarterbacks were usually a toss-up between Nathan Rourke and Zach Collaros. Both were reliable to get me a decent number of points (especially Rourke). I also found myself picking Ka’Deem Carey as my running back quite often, and Eugene Lewis was another top-point getter for me at receiver.

Ferguson: Greg Ellingson has never done wrong by me. In Montreal he should get plenty of touches this season.

O’Leary: For some reason some former BC Lions quarterbacks come to mind here. Michael Reilly, Nathan Rourke. Vernon Adams Jr. is in a good spot to carry the fantasy torch this year.

What’s been your most successful strategy in CFL Fantasy to this point?

Nye: Finding the discounts early and hitting them until the prices jump. Cheap mobile quarterbacks and target-hogs. Eight catches for 60 yards is better than three catches for 90.

Ferguson: Find the best value receivers and ride them into the fantasy championship sunset.

O’Leary: I shamelessly bandwagon. I jumped on the Nathan Rourke train last year by Week 3 and stayed with him consistently until he was injured.
