Blue Bombers name new head coach

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announced today that Doug Berry is the 26th head coach in the team's 75-year history.

Prior to joining the Bombers, Berry was an assistant coach with the East Division champion Montreal Alouettes for the past seven seasons.

As the Alouettes' offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Berry helped Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo become one of the most effective passers in the CFL. Calvillo was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Player in 2003 and he has passed for over 5,000 yards in each of the past three seasons.

Previous to his stint as offensive coordinator, Berry served as the Als' offensive line coach for four years. During that stretch the Als had three O-linemen named the CFL's Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman – Uzooma Okeke (1999), Pierre Vercheval (2000) and Bryan Chiu (2002).

“We're extremely pleased to get someone with Doug's football pedigree,&rdquo said Bombers general manager Brendan Taman.

“We feel that his knowledge of the CFL game and his ability to maximize the abilities of the players he works with will help make the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a team to contend with, both now and in the future.&rdquo

Berry, a 30-year coaching veteran, also has extensive experience at the U.S. collegiate level. His coaching resume includes stints at Richmond, Boston College, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Penn State.

He and his wife, Carol, have two daughters, Jessica and Kasey.
