Turner tops E-Camp tables on Saturday

TORONTO — Steven Turner was easily one of the most impressive players during Saturday’s testing at the CFL E-Camp presented by Reebok.

TURNER: Top Receiver

The Bishop’s receiver and return specialist led the receivers in every category on the day and came just short of breaking an E-Camp record in the vertical leap on Saturday afternoon.

The Bishop’s Wide Receiver leapt an outstanding 43.5 inches, finishing just a half-inch shy of former teammate Jamall Lee’s record 44-inch leap from last year.

What’s scary is that Turner’s best event may still be yet to come in the 40-yard dash.

In addition to his huge vertical leap the 5’9” speedster tied Concordia’s Cory Greenwood for the best standing broad jump at 10 feet 4.5 inches. He also led all receivers in the strength testing section with 20 repetitions on the bench press.

Turner led the CIS in punt return average in 2009 with an amazing 20.4 yards per return and brought back two punts for touchdowns. He also had 11 catches for 207 yards and one TD for the Gaiters last season en route to a QUFL All-Star selection.

Turner has made three QUFL All-Star squads overall and twice been named the Bishop’s special teams player of the year.

Considering his success so far at this year’s E-Camp it’s hard to believe he hasn’t even competed in his specialty. Turner will bring blazing speed into tomorrow’s 40-yard dash and could very well challenge for the top time of the day if not Lee’s record of 4.39 seconds set last year.

Leading up to E-Camp Lee had words of advice for his former teammate Turner. And now Turner might just topple some of Lee’s E-Camp records. It must have been good advice.
