Lions name Skulsky president and CEO

VANCOUVER — BC Lions Football Club owner David Braley announced today he that he has appointed Dennis Skulsky as the organization’s 29th president in team history, effective May 1st, 2010.

“Dennis is the perfect fit for this job, bringing a wealth of leadership experience to the role,” said Braley. “His passion for the CFL along with tremendous respect and recognition as a business and community leader will benefit the Lions as he leads this organization into the future.”

Skulsky joins the Lions following a long and storied career in the media industry. He currently holds the position of president and CEO of Canwest Publishing, a title he has held since 2006. Prior to that, Skulsky spent six years as president and publisher of The Pacific Newspaper Group which operates The Vancouver Sun and The Province.

“This is a dream job and I’m truly honored to be given the opportunity to take on the challenges and responsibilities of the role in just a few short weeks,” said Skulsky. “The Lions organization is one of Canada’s most respected professional sports franchises benefitting from great leaders like David Braley, Wally Buono, George Chayka and my dear friend the late Bob Ackles.”

In 2003, Skulsky was recruited by then Lions president Bob Ackles as one of the founding members of the Lions’ business ambassadors group The Waterboys who help build the club’s brand in the corporate community.

David Braley recently recruited Skulsky and fellow Waterboy Moray Keith as co-chairs of the 2011 Grey Cup. Skulsky held a similar post in 2005 when Vancouver last hosted the league championship. He officially joins the Lions on May 1st approximately one month prior to the beginning 2010 training camp in Kamloops.
