WINNIPEG –Equipped with a new front office regime and a new attitude, expectations have been rather high for the Bombers as they work through training camp.
But following yesterday’s loss to the Argonauts in the league’s pre-season opener, it’s clear that head coach Mike O’Shea and the Bombers still have plenty of work to do.
“Terrible, we lost. It’s a loss there’s no other way to talk about it,” said O’Shea following his team’s Monday night loss.
It wasn’t all negative for the Bombers though, as they finally got a chance to see their off-season additions in game situations, following a week of drills and limited contact.
Of those additions, it was QB Drew Willy who hogged most of the spotlight, as he took his first snaps in Blue and Gold following an off-season of excitement from the Winnipeg faithful.
He didn’t light up the Toronto defence by any means, but he was solid in his limited action, completing six of his 12 passes for 108 yards and one touchdown.
While O’Shea wasn’t overly impressed with his pivot’s performance, he did see some glimpses of positivity.
“We’ll watch the film and he’ll get better, they’ll all get better, the effort was great, I’m not worried about that,” said O’Shea.
Willy himself knows that there is room for improvement.
“We just need to keep sharpening up those reads and just go from there,” said Willy.
“I liked how we got into a rhythm there in that last drive of the second quarter. We got some good plays going we getting to that plus 40 range where you’re in that field goal-punt range, we just need to keep moving the ball and get touchdowns up on the board.”
