MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes have made the first significant trade deadline deal in some time, acquiring veteran quarterback Kevin Glenn from the Saskatchewan Roughriders in exchange for a 5th round pick in the 2016 CFL Draft.

According to TSN’s Joey Alfieri, Glenn will be under contract through 2016 after reaching an agreement with the Als:

The addition of Glenn will help stabilize an Alouette offence that has had a carousel of quarterbacks seeing game time after Jonathan Crompton was injured in the team’s season opener. Despite Crompton’s return and the play of rookie Rakeem Cato, the Alouettes find themselves in need of an experienced pivot after the latter was injured the club’s most recent loss to Toronto over the weekend.

“By acquiring Kevin, it gives us a veteran leader at the QB position at a key time as we pushed for a playoff spot,” said Alouettes General Manager and Head Coach Jim Popp.

Glenn signed as a backup with Saskatchewan in 2015 but was quickly pressed into action after Darian Durant suffered a season-ending injury in the Riders’ season-opener vs. Winnipeg. He’s led the CFL’s second-ranked offence (381.1 yards per game) this season, starting eight games and logging a quarterback rating of 88.2.

The Riders dropped to 2-13 after their loss to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats last Friday and were eliminated from playoff contention. They’ll likely turn to rookie starter Brett Smith for their final three games as they look toward the future.

The Alouettes, meanwhile, are in a heated battle for a playoff spot. Five out of six playoff spots seem to be accounted for, while three teams — BC, Winnipeg and Montreal — are fighting for the third seed in the West.

Montreal is tied with the Bombers and Lions with a game in hand on Winnipeg, but will need to finish a full game ahead of both teams in order to qualify for the West Division crossover. If successful, the Als would become the first East Division team ever to cross over to the West to make the playoffs.

Glenn owns a career 89.8 quarterback rating in 15 CFL seasons, taking snaps for five different CFL teams thus far. He’s also been a member of the Toronto Argonauts and Ottawa REDBLACKS without suiting up for either team, however, leaving Edmonton as the only team he’s never been a member of.

The Illinois State graduate is currently 10th on the CFL all-time passing list with 45,510 passing yards.

The Alouettes’ next game is on Sunday, when they’ll host the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with a chance to sweep the three-game season series.

The CFL Trade Deadline was Wednesday at 4:00pm
