On the Market: Duron Carter becomes a free agent

TORONTO — Free agency may have its new biggest name, as former Alouettes star receiver Duron Carter has become a free agent.

Carter, 24, was released by the NFL’s Indianapolis Colts on Tuesday after not receiving a future contract to remain on the team’s practice squad.

The son of Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver and ESPN Analyst Cris Carter, Duron spent 2015 with the Colts after ranking third in the CFL in 2014 with 1,030 receiving yards and seven touchdowns on 75 catches.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have already expressed interest in Carter according to Ed Tait of the Winnipeg Free Press:

Carter has not commented on any possible return to the CFL, but if he returns would join a star-studded list of players potentially available via free agency, one that includes 2015 leading receiver Eric Rogers among others. A CFL All-Star in 2014, the 6-foot-5 Carter possesses the size and playmaking ability that every team covets.

While Carter is eligible to sign with a team immediately, pending free agents are available to sign on Feb. 9.

A return to Montreal is also a possibility for Carter, where he was first given the chance to kick off his professional football career after signing with the Alouettes in 2013. That year, Carter made his CFL debut in August and went on to play 12 regular season games along with a playoff game.

In two seasons with Montreal, Carter caught 124 passes for 1,939 yards and 12 touchdowns. TSN 690‘s Rick Moffat tweeted that the Alouettes would love to have the Florida Atlantic graduate back in the fold next season, but added that catching on with another NFL team remains a possibility.
