WINNIPEG — Alex Suber is retiring as a Winnipeg Blue Bomber.
The Bombers announced Friday that Suber has returned to the organization, signing a one-day contract before announcing his retirement from professional football.
Suber spent six seasons in the CFL, five of them with the Bombers while appearing in 65 career games at the defensive halfback position.
“Alex was a consummate professional from the moment he arrived in Winnipeg six years ago,” said Blue Bombers General Manager Kyle Walters. “He was one of those players who was willing to do whatever it was going to take to win a football game, and maintained a very team-first mentality throughout his career.
“We thank him for his contributions both on and off the field to our organization.”
During his tenure with Winnipeg, Suber accumulated 226 defensive tackles, 28 special teams tackles, three interceptions (one returned for a 66-yard touchdown), six fumble recoveries, one sack, 15 tackles for loss, and 12 pass knockdowns.
He also started the 2011 East Final, recording an interception and a fumble recovery, and the 2011 Grey Cup, recording six tackles and two pass knockdowns in the championship game.
“I’m proud and thankful for this opportunity to retire as a Winnipeg Blue Bomber,” Suber said. “Some of my most memorable years of football happened in the city of Winnipeg, and with that great organization.
“I’d like to give thanks to god, my family, friends and coaches who supported me throughout my career. The fans in Winnipeg are the absolute best in the CFL, and I made some friendships there that will last forever.
“It’s a great football province, and I’ll always consider myself a Blue Bomber.”
A hard-hitting 5-foot-7, 174-pound defender, Suber was traded to Toronto midway through the 2014 season and finished his playing career with Saskatchewan in 2015. In total, the Middle Tennessee State product played and started in 76 career CFL games, recorded 261 defensive tackles, four interceptions, 29 special teams tackles, and six fumble recoveries.
“Alex represented our organization very well, and played the game the way it is supposed to be played,” said Blue Bombers President and CEO Wade Miller. “We were honoured that he wanted to retire as a member of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and we wish him the very best in life after football.”
