TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts’ 30-17 win over the Montreal Alouettes Monday night didn’t come without a cost, as the team confirmed Tuesday evening that quarterback Ricky Ray will be sidelined 3-6 weeks with a sprained MCL.
Ray exited during the fourth quarter of the Argos’ first win at BMO Field after Als defensive tackle Vaughn Martin fell into him after the ball was thrown.
Before the injury, the 36-year-old Happy Camp, Calif. native pivoted the Argos to a two-touchdown lead on the strength of three touchdown passes and 235 yards on 29-of-34 passing.
The veteran pivot originally stayed in the game for one more play after sustaining the injury, handing the ball off to Brandon Whitaker before exiting to the bench. He was later spotted on the bench with his knee wrapped in ice, where he remained for the duration of the game.
With Ray just getting on a roll, now sitting with 1,235 passing yards and nine touchdowns to just a single interception on the season, the injury is an ill-timed one for Ray and the Argos. Yet the Boatmen should also look forward to seeing what they’ve got in 26-year-old backup Logan Kilgore, a 6-foot-3 pivot with a live arm.
It was Kilgore’s progression this past off-season that allowed the Argos to move Mitchell Gale to Saskatchewan in a trade for defensive end Shawn Lemon.
“Logan was our backup for a reason,” Milanovich said. “I think he’s got a huge upside and I think he’ll show everybody that.
“It’s time for him to step up and shine and do what many guys have done before him.”
Kilgore is expected to make his first career start on Sunday, July 31, when the Argos visit the nation’s capital for a meeting with the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
