By the Numbers: Alouette offence coming to life

MONTREAL — There’s life in the Montreal Alouettes’ offence.

Remember in Week 1 when the Als teased us with what looked like an offence that could control the clock and make big plays in a season-opening road win over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers?

After a hiatus that saw the team fall to 2-5 on the season, that Montreal Alouette offence was back in Week 9, leading the Als to a win over the East Division-leading Ottawa REDBLACKS — a decisive 43-19 road victory that could be the turning point of the 2016 season both for Jim Popp’s club and Anthony Calvillo’s unit.

Whether that holds true or not, we’ll wait and see, but what’s certain is last Friday’s victory was at least a step in the right direction:

Kevin Glenn tied a career-high with five touchdown passes while Duron Carter got the best of former Alouettes defensive back Mitchell White as the Als put up their highest point total of the season against a hard to play against Rick Campbell-coached defence.

So there’s life, but is it sustainable? Coming into the season the Alouettes looked like a darkhorse in the East Division, especially if Noel Thorpe’s aggressive playmaking defence could be supplemented offensively.

So far that hasn’t happened consistently, but the pieces are there.

In Week 10, Tyrell Sutton and Kenny Stafford will be back in the lineup for the first time in eight weeks.

The Alouettes are 3-5 and just a game and a half out of first in the East. More than anything, the offence will determine what happens next.
