Quarterback Index: Nichols moving up after leading Winnipeg to victory

Larry MacDougal/CFL.ca

A western shootout between two young gunslingers highlighted Week 6 in the Canadian Football League. Jon Jennings and Bo Levi Mitchell combined for more than 700 yards passing and seven total touchdowns in thrilling overtime game. It seems like those two franchise pivots are going to be going toe-to-toe for years to come.

Off to the Quarterback Index which features some changes in the ranks.

1) Mike Reilly
Edmonton Eskimos
(Last Week: 1)

Yet another slow start cost Edmonton, Reilly couldn’t get the offence rolling until midway through the third quarter and it was too late. Expect the Eskmos’ quarterback to get the sputtering first halves straightened out.

2) Bo Levi Mitchell
Calgary Stampeders
(Last Week: 2)

Calgary’s 26-year-old passer engineered three fourth-quarter touchdown drives to power a comeback victory. And Mitchell might have found a new deep threat in Greg Wilson.

3) Jonathon Jennings
BC Lions
(Last Week: 3)

If Jennings could have one throw back in the loss against the Stampeders it would be the ball he threw off his back foot, floated to the wide side, intended for Marco Iannuzzi, and that Ciante Evans intercepted, which led to the game-tying touchdown and two-point convert.

4) Kevin Glenn
Montreal Alouettes
(Last Week: 5)

Targeting Duron Carter early and often really seemed to get Montreal’s offence in flight. Glenn’s clearly developed a strong rapport with the son of an NFL Hall of Fame receiver.

5) Henry Burris
Ottawa REDBLACKS
(Last Week: IR)

Hank said himself that he was getting back into the flow of a game, so we’ll give the reigning MOP a pass on an ugly effort.

6) Jeremiah Masoli
Hamilton Tiger-Cats
(Last Week: 6)

Anyone who touched Masoli’s right hand was likely burned during Hamilton’s bye week.

7) Matt Nichols
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
(Last Week: 9)

Winnipeg’s offence looked like a re-energized unit with Nichols behind centre. He made quick decisions, delivered the football with authority and pushed the ball vertically.

8) Logan Kilgore
Toronto Argonauts
(Last Week: NR)

There were some encouraging signs from Kilgore in his first career CFL start. Most importantly he found a way to guide the Argos to a win. Over 300 yards passing in a debut is great production.

9) Mitchell Gale
Saskatchewan Roughriders
(Last Week: 7)

Crashing back to reality, Gale struggled to generate drives on offence until the game was well out of reach in Montreal.

10) Travis Lulay
BC Lions
(Last Week: 10)

BC believes they have great depth at quarterback because of Lulay.

11) Drew Willy
Winnipeg Blue Bombers
(Last Week: 11)

Watching from the bench gets you dropped in the ranks.
