WINNIPEG @ HAMILTON

Jeremiah Masoli

Jeremiah Masoli hopes for a win this week against Winnipeg (The Canadian Press)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats met a very good defence and it was the complete opposite of their season debut. The loss was a bit of a wake up call for Hamilton and it’s very rare they lost once at Tim Horton’s Field, let alone back to back games. The Tiger-Cats sent a message to the team by releasing Geoff Tisdale. That will get the attention of a team that under performed in its home-opener. I’d expect a team that looks more like the one we saw beat Toronto 42-20 in game one rather than the one that could only score rouges.

In come the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who are starting to get a little antsy after dropping the first two games of the season following a busy off-season loading up on some pretty decent free agent talent. The money they’ve spent has not equated into wins. After missing most of the first two games with injury, the Bombers do add Weston Dressler back in the receiving mix for this game.

I think the Bombers fall to 0-3 on the season and even more anxiety coming to a team that went all in to turn around its fortunes.

TORONTO @ BC

The Toronto Argonauts took advantage of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who made three major mistakes that all led to Argonaut touchdowns. The Argos still have some work to do across the board, as their offence didn’t get much done against the Riders and their defence has allowed two straight games of 300-plus yards passing by opposing quarterbacks.

On the other side of the ball, you have the home team BC Lions who are becoming the talk of the league with their 2-0 start. The power house duo of Adam Bighill and Solomon Elimimian are holding down the middle of the defense, while Alex Bazzie is finding his pass rushing prowess he had two years ago when he had 10 sacks in his first season in BC. And then there is quarterback Jonathon Jennings, who is managing the offence very well. He isn’t putting up any eye popping numbers but he isn’t turning the ball over.

I have the Lions improving to 3-0.

CALGARY @ OTTAWA

THE CANADIAN PRESS

Bo Levi Mitchell duels it out with Trevor Harris in what is sure to be a high scoring game (The Canadian Press)

This is the game of the week, IMHO. And hopefully it’s a similar game the thriller these two teams put on the field last year at TD Place in Ottawa when they went to overtime.

The Calgary Stampeders have undergone some changes in the off-season and things seem a bit off but they have more than enough talent to figure it out soon and I think they do that this week. Bo Levi Mitchell is starting find new favourite targets in the offence and Jerome Messam is picking up where Jon Cornish left off as the big horse coming out of the backfield.

Now the Stampeders defence has to find a way to slow down Ottawa quarterback Trevor Harris. Since coming in for the injured Henry Burris, Harris has been the league’s top player. But the run game continues to get chipped away with injury, although they have more than enough quality receivers to throw 75 percent of the time.

My head says Ottawa but I’m going with an upset in the nation’s capital on Friday night.

SASKATCHEWAN @ EDMONTON

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

Mike Reilly looks for his first win of 2016 against the Riders (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

The Roughriders head into Edmonton feeling quite confident, despite a double digit loss to the Argonauts to start the season. As previously mentioned, a fumble return for a touchdown, a big special teams gaffe and blown coverage were their downfall against Toronto. Darian Durant threw for over 300 yards and while he came up limping to end the game, all things appear to be headed in the right direction of offence. As for the defence, outside of the one blown coverage they were playing at a high level.

The Eskimos come off a bye week following their overtime loss to the REDBLACKS in Week 1. They need to clean some things up on defence and I’m sure some of Chris Jones’ former players aren’t going to be too hospitable upon his return to Commonwealth. The positive out of the first week for Edmonton is it appears there is no Grey Cup hangover for Mike Reilly, Derel Walker, Adarius Bowman etc. on offence.

I think the Riders are going to give the Eskimos a run well into the fourth quarter but have to side with the Grey Cup Champs this early in the season.
