Weekly Predictor: Will the Tiger-Cats, Eskimos keeping rolling?

David Chidley/CFL.ca

TORONTO — It was a week full of blowouts causing CFL.ca’s Jamie Nye to end Week 9 with a 1-3 record. The Alouettes upset the Ottawa REDBLACKS, the Stampeders proved they’re the best in the West, Edmonton took down the Argonauts and the Tiger-Cats scored 53 points against the Roughriders. This week Nye looks to turn things around with his Weekly Predictor.

CFL Pick ‘Em returns with more up for grabs than ever before because this season more than $130,000 in combined cash and prizes are up for grabs.*

Pick 30 in a row, win $30,000; pick 40, win $40,000; think you can pick 50 straight? You’re looking at $50,000. *View rules regarding streaks and prizing.

Here’s Jamie Nye with his picks for Week 10:

BC @ OTTAWA

Patrick Doyle/CFL.ca

With Trevor Harris back under centre can the REDBLACKS turn things around? (CFL.ca)

Both teams took it on the chin last week and shook the confidence of this prognosticator after picking them both to win those games.

Trevor Harris is back to being the number one quarterback in Ottawa and with him at the helm the REDBLACKS played very good football. Travon Van also returns, which continues to help an already high octane offence.

The Lions, meanwhile, must be very disappointed after getting beat up in a very crucial game against the Stampeders. It showed there is a little ways to go yet for the Lions to start labeling themselves as a contender. A win over the reigning East Division Champions may help.

I’m going with the home side in this one with Harris asserting himself again as primed to take the reins in Ottawa.

WINNIPEG @ MONTREAL

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

The Montreal offence came alive in their victory over Ottawa but can the Als do it again this week? (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers are coming off a bye week trying to stretch their winning streak to four games and climb above .500 going into the second half of the season. The decision to go with Matt Nichols has paid off for Winnipeg, and are a team that is showing the amount of money they’ve spent on free agency in the last two years is paying off.

The Alouettes need to show they can put two games together after blowing out Ottawa. They also had a dominant win against Saskatchewan a few weeks ago, only to head back to their inconsistent play. The Alouettes defence is always going to be a tough one to play as they can make big plays to help out their sometimes struggling offence.

I’m going with another home team and think the Alouettes can go back to back for the first time this season.

SASKATCHEWAN @ EDMONTON

Bowman Thumb

The most dangerous trio in the CFL, including receiver Adarius Bowman, plays host to the struggling Roughriders in Week 10 (CFL.ca)

The last time these two tangled it was an epic overtime battle. That was in Week 2. A lot has changed for these two teams since then.

The Eskimos appear ready to shake a poor start defensively and with the offence being one of the most prolific in the CFL, Edmonton looks like they have turned the corner to start to move toward defending their Western title against their provincial rival.

The Roughriders last four weeks have been among the worst stretches of four games you can get, being outscored by an average of 37-9. Darian Durant is coming off throwing four interceptions against Hamilton and has been known as a pretty good bounce back player. He’s going to have to turn a career worst start into a career best to win in Edmonton on Friday.

HAMILTON @ CALGARY

David Chidley/CFL.ca

Terrence Toliver was Zach Collaros’ favourite target last week. The receiver had five catches for 139 yards and one touchdown (CFL.ca)

Some are saying this could be a Grey Cup preview this week between the Tiger-Cats and Stampeders.

With Zach Collaros back at quarterback, the Tiger-Cats have put over 90 points on the board in the last two weeks. Their defence is always one that can not only stop a good offence like the one in Calgary, but score also.

The Stampeders are starting to get some momentum after improving to 6-1-1 with a dominant win over BC. It’s scary to think there was some humming and hawing earlier in the season whether the Stampeders were starting to slip. Bo Levi Mitchell has been lights out but the defence in Calgary has allowed just 34 points in their last three games.

I feel like I’ve picked too many home teams this week, but always one to love the upset. I’m picking this one to be it for this week.

CFL on DraftKings

With CFL now on DraftKings, Nye checks in with his weekly fantasy roster. Set your lineup today!

I’m going with the big guns in Edmonton against the struggling Saskatchewan Roughriders defence, who have given up the most points in the league, by far this season and the offence isn’t helping out that defence either.

I don’t think any more needs to be said why I have Mike Reilly at quarterback, Adarius Bowman at receivers and a MUST WATCH play with Shakir Bell at running back.

Bell is expected to start but if John White is able to go, I’ll be scrambling to find a replacement who will come in under $4,400 but there are plenty of plays at receiver there, including former Rider Chris Getzlaf against his former team. We saw what John Chick was able to do last week.

Travon Van is expected to start at RB with Ottawa and is a solid play to add some dimension to the REDBLACKS attack with Trevor Harris back at quarterback. I’ll also play Greg Ellingson at receiver as he continues to impress as the next option behind Chris Williams.

Finally, the duo of Alouettes players with Nik Lewis being the next best option to Duron Carter and after 100+ and a score last week, why not role with the veteran slotback.

As for playing the Alouettes defence, if their offence can keep them off the field, they’re still a big play defence on a week to week basis with good value as well.
