HAMILTON, Ont. — The Hamilton Tiger-Cats announced today that the team has released non-import kicker Sandro DeAngelis.
DeAngelis played in all 18 games last season after signing with the Ticats on February 22, 2010. He joined the club as a free agent after spending the previous five seasons in Calgary.
DeAngelis struggled at points during the 2010 season, posting a career low 76.2 per cent on field goals.
When DeAngelis joined the Cats he was coming off a West Division All-Star season where he connected on 42 of 49 field goal attempts (86 per cent). He was also Calgary’s nominee for Most Outstanding Special Teams Player for the fifth consecutive season.
2008 may have been DeAngelis’s best season. He connected on 86.2 per cent of his field goal attempts and was named a CFL All-Star. He capped his season with a Grey Cup Championship against the Montreal Alouettes at Olympic Stadium in Montreal.
DeAngelis was named the Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Canadian after kicking five field goals in Calgary’s win over Montreal.
His 56 field goals made during the 2006 season were the third highest single-season total in CFL history.
A native of Niagara Falls, Ont., DeAngelis entered the league in 2005. He played all 18 games in his rookie CFL season with the Calgary Stampeders after signing as a free agent on March 8. He was Calgary’s nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie and Most Outstanding Special Teams Player that year and was named a CFL All-Star.
