WINNIPEG — Head Coach Tim Burke added to his coaching staff today as he announced the hiring of Carl Franks as the team’s defensive backs coach. Franks has extensive experience in the NCAA having most recently served as the secondary coach and recruiting coordinator at Western Illinois University.
“Carl is an excellent teacher who will be a great addition to our coaching staff,” said Burke. “We share many of the same beliefs when it comes to the defensive secondary and I look forward to working with him and helping him learn the nuances of our game.”
At Western Illinois, Franks’ defensive secondary’s were some of the most dangerous of the Missouri Valley Football Conference as twice his defences ranked in the top two in passing defence, finishing first in 2010, and second in the same category in 2012.
Franks was in charge of cornerbacks and special teams while at Northern Arizona from 2003-2008 and his secondary led the league in interceptions three times (2003, 2005, 2007) while also leading the nation in interceptions in 2003.
He spent the summer of 2003 working with the Tennessee Titans as a coaching intern during training camp following three seasons at Utah State as special teams coordinator and assistant secondary coach and three seasons at his alma mater, the University of Montana, in the same capacities.
Franks was an All-Big Sky selection at safety in 1993 after lettering for two years with the Grizzlies. Franks was a teammate of current Blue Bombers’ special teams coordinator, Craig Dickenson.
