Argos sign 2015 third overall pick Sean McEwen

TORONTO — Three days after adding nine in the draft, the Argos have added more young talent to their roster with the signing of 2015 third overall pick Sean McEwen.

A 6-foot-3, 297-pound offensive lineman and former Calgary Dino, McEwen was the Argos’ first pick in the 2015 CFL Draft before electing to return to school. In five seasons, the Calgary, Alta. native played 40 regular season games and anchored the Dinos’ O-line on the way to three straight Hardy Cup Championships.

“Sean is an athletic, smart and tough young player that has a passion for the game,” said Argonauts general manager Jim Barker. “He possesses the skills of a true centre which is not easy to find.

“When we drafted him we understood he wanted to return to school to finish his degree and we’re excited to finally have him in Double Blue”.

McEwen topped all offensive linemen in the bench press (27 reps), 40-yard dash (5.01s) and three-cone drill (7.82) while ranking third at his position in the shuttle drill (4.8s) at the 2015 CFL Combine.

The three-time CIS All-Canadian and four-time Canada West All-Star attended rookie mini-camp with NFL’s New York Giants in 2015 and was one of three Canadians invited to participate in the 2016 East-West Shrine Bowl.

McEwen adds even more young talent and depth to the Argos’ O-line, which is quickly becoming one of the CFL’s deepest as far as national talent. This off-season alone the Boatmen have re-signed Wayne Smith, signed free agents Josh Bourke and Corey Watman and drafted D.J. Sackey (2nd round, 13th overall), Jamal Campbell (3rd round, 22nd overall) and Chris Kolankowski (6th round, 49th overall).
