Lions extend veteran defender Steven Clarke

The Canadian Press

VANCOUVER — The BC Lions have agreed to a contract extension with three-year veteran and defensive back Steven Clarke, the team announced Tuesday.

Clarke, 25, started four games for the Lions in 2016 at halfback before suffering a season-ending knee injury on Aug. 19 vs. the Calgary Stampeders.

“Steven is a gifted defensive back who gives us valuable experience and stability in the secondary heading into 2017,” said Head Coach and General Manager Wally Buono.

After spending the first four games as a defensive reserve, the Vanderbilt graduate recorded 13 tackles and a sack after taking the place of T.J. Lee, who suffered a season-ending injury early in the year.

The 5-foot-10, 195-pound defensive back from Lauderdale Lakes, Fla., originally joined the Lions towards the end of the 2014 season following the CFL’s annual practice roster expansion. He re-joined the Lions in May, 2016 following a brief stint with the NFL’s Tennessee Titans.
