Argos officially bring back Marcus Ball

Adam Gagnon

TORONTO — After three seasons away from the CFL, linebacker Marcus Ball has re-joined the Toronto Argonauts.

The deal was initially reported by TSN‘s Farhan Lalji on Thursday and confirmed by the team as camp opened up Sunday.

Ball joined the Argonauts in 2012 and instantly made his mark, starting at outside linebacker and helping the Boatmen capture the 100th Grey Cup at home. Before his departure he was widely considered one of the most physical and productive linebackers in the league, racking up 142 tackles, seven sacks, four interceptions and two career touchdowns.

In February of 2014, the Argos released Ball to allow him to sign a contract with the Carolina Panthers. Ball remained in Carolina for a pair of seasons — primarily on the practice roster — during the team’s run to the Super Bowl in 2016.

Over the last three seasons, the former Memphis Tiger has spent time with the New Orleans Saints, Carolina Panthers and the San Francisco 49ers. In 18 NFL games, he notched 20 tackles (15 solo, 5 assisted).

Ball will officially make his return on Sunday afternoon when the Argonauts take the field for the first practice of their 2017 training camp at York University’s Alumni Field at 4 p.m. ET.

The Argonauts also announced today that the club has released international defensive back Quayshawn Nealy.
