Argos, Lions ease injured receivers into camp

TORONTO —  The Argos and Lions both had updates on their new-acquired star receivers on Sunday, as S.J. Green and Chris Williams continue to work their way back from season-ending knee injuries in 2016.

While both receivers have been eased into action, Green, nearly 11 months removed from the gruesome injury that cost him his season, is ahead in the process. He was a full-go at the first Argo practice before sitting the second one.

“I feel amazing,” Green told TSN‘s Matthew Scianitti. “I just trusted the process and it got me to where I am today, where I’ve been cleared by my surgeon and able to participate in training camp with my teammates.”

The Alouettes made a surprise move Monday morning by releasing Bear Woods (Montreal Alouettes)

Green suffered a catastrophic knee injury on June 30 last year, tearing his ACL, MCL, PCL and meniscus on the same play during a Week 2 matchup with the Ottawa REDBLACKS. He went under the knife a month later.

While surgery was needed to repair the ACL, the meniscus only needed to be shaved down and the MCL healed itself before surgery. The PCL, meanwhile, was in the same state it had been in since 2012, when Green sprained it in a game against the Ticats — he’s played on it ever since without issue.

Shortly after the Alouettes held their annual off-season mini-camp, the 31-year-old veteran was traded to the Argos.

Argos head coach Marc Trestman says Green will be eased into action carefully.

“We’ve got a good plan for him,” Trestman told Argonauts.ca. “He’s going to practise in the first practice for the first week and we’ll see how he feels — see how he feels after practice and the next day.

“He’s been cleared by the doctors and the advice we’ve been given, and we’re going to take, is we’re going to ease him in slowly and see how he feels during practice and after practice. But he’ll be out there every day working.”

Green, meanwhile, sees no holding back in his first camp as an Argo.

“I feel like I’m full-go,” Green told TSN. “I don’t see the benefit of holding back. I don’t know how to play any other way than how I play. I’ll just be myself, that’s what I know how to do.”

Chris Williams is a few months behind in the process after suffering his injury in October. The Lions’ big off-season signing told BCLions.com he is ‘pretty much ready to go’, although the team is taking a cautious approach.

On Sunday, the first day of Lions camp in Kamloops, B.C., Williams spent the entire day workout out and stretching on the sidelines.

His Lions debut is certainly highly-anticipated after recording 1,246 yards in 14 games for the Grey Cup-winning Ottawa REDBLACKS.
