REGINA — It didn’t take Jovon Johnson long to find a new home. Two days after being released by the Als, the 33-year-old landed a practice roster deal with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.
The Riders also announced Monday they’ve added international linebacker Jordan Burton and national linebacker Dillon Grondin to their practice roster.
Johnson, a 5-foot-9, 189-pound defensive back, was released by the Als ahead of Saturday’s roster deadline. He was key member to the success of Noel Thorpe’s defensive squad last season, registering 59 defensive tackles, six quarterback sacks and three interceptions. He also knocked down eight passes in 18 starts.
The 11th-year veteran previously played for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the Ottawa REDBLACKS. He was elected a CFL All-Star on two occasions (2009 and 2011) and an East Division All-Star five times (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2015).
Both durability and versatility have been key for the 33-year-old, who can play multiple positions in the defensive secondary and has missed only four games over the last nine seasons.
