Riders release Jonathan Newsome

REGINA — The Saskatchewan Roughriders have released defensive end Jonathan Newsome, the team announced Tuesday.

The 26-year-old was in his second season with the Riders and recorded an interception and a defensive tackle in his only game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Canada Day.

Newsome played all 18 games for the Green and White in his first CFL season in 2016, recording 27 defensive tackles, six special teams tackles and a pair of sacks.

After an 0-2 start, the Riders are back in action on Saturday, when they look for win No. 1 against the Ticats at new Mosaic Stadium.
