Week 4 Fantasy Recap: Diffusing the week that was

THE CANADIAN PRESS

One of the best Fantasy weeks of the young season – and one of the most remarkable in league history – came to the benefit of few, if any, owners.

Travis Lulay’s 32.1 Fantasy points in BC’s win at Hamilton on Saturday night came in relief of starter Jonathon Jennings, whose projected breakout performance ended on the Lions’ first play from scrimmage when he injured his shoulder. Lulay ($4,295) responded with a record-setting 436 yards off the bench, along with three passing touchdowns and a rushing touchdown to boot. Lulay’s Fantasy totals would have been higher had he not thrown a pair of interceptions.

While Fantasy owners could not have foreseen Jennings’ unexpected exit, those who played BC’s Nick Moore ($5,284) were rewarded with a huge night. Moore, who had just 12 total Fantasy points (2.2 in the previous two weeks), become Lulay’s go-to target as he caught 10 passes for a career-high 220 yards and a touchdown on 11 targets, producing 28 Fantasy points. To put Moore’s night in perspective, his 28 Fantasy points were more than the combined season total of teammate Emmanuel Arceneaux ($6,842), who has just 19.1 Fantasy points heading into the Lions’ Week 5 matchup against Winnipeg.

Lulay was the only pivot to eclipse the 20-point barrier this week. Edmonton’s Mike Reilly, the highest-salaried quarterback at $13,558, managed just 16.4 Fantasy points in the Eskimos’ victory over still-winless Ottawa. Trevor Harris ($10,601), who came into the game with three straight games of at least 20 Fantasy points, produced just 15.4 in the REDBLACKS’ defeat. For the second straight week, Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell ($11,789) failed to reach the threshold as the Montreal defence held him to just one passing major and 19.2 Fantasy points.

Those who played Toronto’s Ricky Ray in hopes of the Argos’ triggerman keeping his early season run of success were let down as Ray ($10,729) had only 9.2 Fantasy points in their loss to Winnipeg.

Blue Bombers running back Andrew Harris was worth his $7,984 salary as he amassed 21.4 Fantasy points in the win over the Argonauts. Harris rushed for a pair of touchdowns while finishing with 81 yards on 17 carries and a pair of pass receptions for 13 yards. Montreal’s Tyrell Sutton, the league’s leading rusher, put up 16.7 Fantasy points in their surprising win over Calgary, rewarding the Fantasy owners who invested in his salary of $6,407. The returning William Powell ($5,974) produced 14.6 FP in Ottawa’s loss at Edmonton.

The most surprising performance among running backs came from Toronto’s Martese Jackson ($2,500), who put 19.5 Fantasy points on his 339 combined yards on returns. Jackson scored on a 78-yard punt return and was credited with an 84-yard kickoff return after a penalty wiped out what would have been a 109-yard return for a major.

Jalen Saunders ($2,500) was the biggest Week 4 bargain among receivers, putting up 20.7 FP in the loss to BC. Saunders had five catches for 147 yards and a touchdown, and he is trending up leading into the Week 5 contest against Edmonton as he looks to be no worse than the second receiver of choice in the Ticats’ offence. The Ticats will need to throw even more than usual as the defence has put them behind early in games.

Kamar Jorden ($5,312) failed to score for the first time this season, but his nine-catch, 140-yard outing netted 14 FP. However, Diontae Spencer ($6,010) produced just three Fantasy points as he had just one catch for 30 yards in the REDBLACKS’ loss to the Eskimos. The lack of production ran counter to the previous two weeks when Spencer had put up 564 all-purpose yards.

The struggles of Arceneaux and Edmonton’s Adarius Bowman ($7,063) continue to perplex Fantasy owners. Arceneaux has yet to score a touchdown this season, while Bowman has been a roller coaster. After putting up 17.7 Fantasy points in a Week 2 win over Montreal, Bowman had just 8.3 FP in last week’s win over Ottawa.

With Matt Nichols ($9,718) struggling the past two weeks, the productivity of Blue Bombers receivers Darvin Adams ($6,874) and Clarence Denmark ($4,573) has suffered, although Weston Dressler ($6,082) has a pair of 100-yard outings in Winnipeg’s first three games.
