Glenn takes advantage of receiving corps in victory

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders needed a bounce back game in a big way and came through on Saturday night with a 38-27 victory over the visiting Toronto Argonauts.

After the offence struggled in last week’s loss to the Calgary Stampeders, managing just 10 points in the contest, Kevin Glenn and the Riders receiving corps flipped the script in Week 6. With 340 passing yards and four touchdowns, Glenn took full advantage of his talented wideouts to secure the win for Saskatchewan.

In a matchup of two of the league’s oldest starting quarterbacks, Glenn outdueled counterpart Ricky Ray and left the Argos still left seeking their first win against a West Division team.

Using a balanced attack that also included running back Cameron Marshall (18 rushes for 110 yards), the Riders overcame an early deficit to tie the game at halftime and did not relinquish an early fourth quarter lead.

Highlight reel grabs throughout the night by Duron Carter, Naaman Roosevelt and Bakari Grant helped the Riders build the necessary momentum to push through. Saturday night’s game was easily Carter’s best of the season and his one-handed backhand touchdown grab to close out the second quarter immediately entered the Catch of the Year conversation.

Perhaps the turning point of the game came in the fourth quarter. With the Riders up by three points, Glenn found a wide open Grant, who fell to the turf after catching the ball. Instead of forcing the whistle by marking Grant down, Argos defender Johnny Sears missed the tackle, allowing Grant to get back on his feet. He then turned his reception into a 29-yard gain. That led to Caleb Holley’s touchdown with just over a minute remaining, putting the game out of reach for the Boatmen to recover.

The win moves Saskatchewan to 2-3 and keeps them in the thick of the West Division race. They will look to make it two wins in a row when they visit the BC Lions next week.
