Quarterback Index: Fast ride up for Glenn

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

The CFL.ca Quarterback Index is a weekly power ranking of quarterbacks across the CFL. The ranking reflects recent performance, historical value, statistical indicators, team success and overall on-field evaluation.

TORONTO — In a season of highs and lows, Kevin Glenn has reached new territory for 2017. A week after his worst performance of the season vs. the Lions, Glenn responded with his best outing against the very same opponent in a 41-8 win over the Lions.

The Riders are on the rise while their pivot is quietly putting up a very strong campaign, keeping his team afloat in the ultra-competitive West Division.

While Glenn jumps four spots heading into the bye, the real intrigue comes out of Vancouver. Travis Lulay and Jonathon Jennings both struggled throughout their one-sided loss to Saskatchewan, doing nothing to quash what is quickly becoming a full-fledged quarterback controversy.

Elsewhere, Ricky Ray lands on the injured list while Mike Reilly, Bo Levi Mitchell and Matt Nichols round out a talent-packed top three.

More in this week’s QB Index:

MIKE REILLY EDM
THIS WEEK: 1 | LAST WEEK: 1

Injuries have not stopped the Eskimos from jumping out to a 7-0 start. The constant? Mike Reilly. Despite his two interceptions in Week 8, Reilly led the Eskimos to a tough road win over the REDBLACKS without his two best receivers. The 32-year-old is on track for his first career Most Outstanding Player honour.

BO LEVI MITCHELL CGY
THIS WEEK: 2 | LAST WEEK: 2

Although it may not be until Labour Day that Bo Levi Mitchell gets a chance to reclaim the top spot in the QB Index, the Stamps’ flamethrower has been as good as anyone in 2017. After scoring 101 points in two games before the bye week, his team’s biggest road test of the season arrives with a visit to BC Place.

MATT NICHOLS WPG
THIS WEEK: 3 | LAST WEEK: 4

No late-game heroics were required for Matt Nichols and the cardiac kids in Week 8. The Bombers weren’t perfect but they took care of business in a 39-12 win over Hamilton. All Nichols does is win but now, against the undefeated Edmonton Eskimos, something’s got to give. All eyes on Matty Ice.

KEVIN GLENN SSK
THIS WEEK: 4 | LAST WEEK: 8

After a quick appearance in the top five a couple of weeks ago, Glenn reaches his highest point of 2017 at fourth overall. Statistically, the 38-year-old has been among the CFL’s most productive pivots, entering Week 9 with 2,104 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions.

TREVOR HARRIS OTT
THIS WEEK: 5 | LAST WEEK: 6

While his numbers are among the CFL’s best, Trevor Harris is having a hard time getting his team in the win column in 2017 with just one victory in eight tries. What’s more, Harris has not crossed the 270-yard plateau over his last three tries, totaling 713 yards over that span (237.7 yards per game).

TRAVIS LULAY BC
THIS WEEK: 6 | LAST WEEK: 5

Sunday’s outing aside, the play of Travis Lulay this season gives Wally Buono a difficult decision at quarterback. Lulay has captured some of that 2011 Most Outstanding Player form this season, with 1,491 passing yards and eight touchdowns over a five-game span and is pushing Jonathon Jennings for the starting role.

DARIAN DURANT MTL
THIS WEEK: 7 | LAST WEEK: 7

Friday’s win over Toronto marked just the second time this season that Darian Durant hasn’t thrown an interception. The 34-year-old is settling in nicely with Jacques Chapdelaine and co. in Montreal as the Als are leading the CFL East Division.

JONATHON JENNINGS BC
THIS WEEK: 8 | LAST WEEK: IR

Jonathon Jennings’ disappointing start to the season carried over to his first game back from injury. Jennings was pulled in the first half against the Riders but returned for the second, ultimately finishing with four interceptions in a one-sided loss. His starting job may be in jeopardy.

ZACH COLLAROS HAM
THIS WEEK: 9 | LAST WEEK: 9

Coming off his best game of the season in Week 7, Zach Collaros still wasn’t himself in a 39-12 loss to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers over the weekend. A re-jigged O-line and a young receiving corps haven’t helped as the Ticats’ pivot searches for his dominant form of 2015.

CODY FAJARDO TOR
THIS WEEK: 10 | LAST WEEK: NOT RANKED

After Jeff Mathews struggled, Fajardo ran the Argos’ first-team offence in the second half of a Week 8 loss to Montreal. While he struggled with accuracy, the former Nevada Wolf Pack pivot provided a spark with his legs and could get another look should Ray remain sidelined.

JEFF MATHEWS TOR
THIS WEEK: 11 | LAST WEEK: NOT RANKED

Mathews couldn’t make it past the first half of his first start as an Argo. Not what the 25-year-old was hoping for after winning the primary backup job to Ricky Ray out of camp. The Cornell grad may or may not get another shot if Ray can’t return in Week 9.

INJURED RESERVE

RICKY RAY TOR
THIS WEEK: IR | LAST WEEK: 3

While Ricky Ray appears to have dodged any serious injury to his shoulder, the veteran pivot still wasn’t ready in time for a Week 8 contest with the Montreal Alouettes. The Argos need Ray back if they hope to contend for the East Division crown this season.
