TMI: Have you seen the Flanders Flip?

Have you seen the Flanders Flip?

While in college at Sam Houston State, Timothy Flanders ran towards the end zone and actually flipped over a defender to score a touchdown. Flipped. Not jumped over, not stutter stepped around. He flipped.

It may have been the most impressive thing I’ve seen since I watched Saskatchewan’s QB Brandon Bridge hurdle a defender, soar through the air, and score a TD a few weeks ago.

See the flip for yourself:

We all remember when Flanders handed over his touchdown ball to a young lady in the crowd and the smile it put on her face, right? The TD wasn’t as spectacular as the Flanders Flip, but it was still pretty incredible. Watch it here.

When Flanders isn’t playing football (and scoring ridiculous touchdowns) he’s either spending time with his son or fishing. He’s only been fishing once in Winnipeg (it’s like he’s busy with football or something..) and he went with a few of his teammates.

He’s also really into crime shows. So into them that when I asked what he was watching he basically named every single one that’s on TV right now.

Flanders also has my favourite pre-game routine that I’ve heard so far since talking to players for these TMIs (and I’ve done a lot of them).

Find out what it is and much more about the Bombers running back in this edition of TMI!

Kristina Costabile: Tell me something that fans might now know about you.

Timothy Flanders: I got my degree in Management Information Studies. Which is pretty much the computer science of business. It’s like computer science but it’s in business.

KC: Is that something you’re planning on pursuing after football?

TF: Yes. Either that or coaching. I’ve been talking about going back and getting my masters in Digital Forensics but I never actually sat down and said, ‘okay, I’m going to do this.’ But it’s something that I’ve been thinking about for a while.

KC: What do you like to do in your free time?

TF: I like to go fishing if I can. I play video games. I have a three-year-old son so I like spending time with him.

KC: Where do you normally go fishing? Any places in Winnipeg?

TF: I’ve been fishing one time here in Winnipeg and I couldn’t tell you where it was. It was kind of, ‘okay, I’m going for the ride.’ Me, Kevin Fogg and TJ Heath, we all went together. I can’t remember the name of it but I was like, ‘okay, I want to go too!’ It was a couple of weeks ago. Probably beginning of September, end of August.

KC: What is your favourite football memory?

TF: In college, I’d probably say going to the National Championship that year. Another college one was when I had a flip I did against our rival school and it made ESPN’s Top 10.

KC: What’s on your pre-game playlist?

TF: I’ve got some gospel songs. I’ve got Kevin Gates. Lil Wayne, Future, YG. It’s either rap or gospel. I have both. They’re the main two I listen to.

KC: Do you have any superstitions or routines that you have to do before a game?

TF: One thing is that I pray before I go out on the field. That’s one thing I have to do. But other than that if I’m getting my ankles taped or something like that, I’ll always start with the left side. Because my thing is if you start with the left everything will go right.

KC: If you were stranded on a deserted island with any one of your teammates, who would it be?

TF: Man.. you’re putting me on the spot now! Do I go with the person I talk to the most or do I go with somebody that could help me out?! I probably go with the person I talk with the most. Probably Manase Foketi!

KC: What is your guilty pleasure song?

TF: I have a lot of Justin Bieber!

KC: Is it old school or the new stuff he’s doing?

TF: It’s like his first album he put out. Like Baby, Baby, I have all of that! (Editors note: This is amazing. And also amazing that he admitted this to me!)

KC: If you could have a dinner party with three people living or dead who would it be?

TF: Ooo, that’s a tough one too! I’m going all alive right now. I’m going with Barry Bonds, my favourite baseball player, Barry Sanders, my favourite football player, and Carmelo Anthony, my favourite basketball player.

KC: Are you binge watching anything?

TF: I have shows that I do watch that just started up again so I’m pretty excited about that! I watch Law and Order: SVU. I’ve seen every season. I think there’s like 20 or something like that. Criminal Minds, I’ve seen every season, every episode. Chicago PD, Chicago Med, Chicago Fire and they had Chicago Justice last year but they didn’t renew their second season.

KC: If you could have one super power what would it be?

TF: That’s probably the hardest question! It’s like, you can be invisible so you can do stuff and not get caught. Or you can fly or time travel, you could just snap your fingers and travel anywhere. I don’t know that’s a hard one!

KC: Let’s go with having a super power to have all super powers?

TF: Yes! Let’s go with that.
