RotoExperts: Week 20 Fantasy Rankings

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

The final week of the regular season means nothing should be left to chance for Fantasy owners. If you’re within range of winning your league, all options should be put on the table, including the faith to play Hamilton’s Jeremiah Masoli as your starting pivot.

Masoli ($10,245) is coming off a career-high 408-yard effort that included four touchdown passes in last week’s win over Montreal, which helped him rack up a season-high 34.2 Fantasy points. He’s been the hottest pivot this side of Mike Reilly, putting up at least 20 Fantasy points in four of the last five weeks, and he has a chance to close out the 2017 campaign against an Alouettes team that has lost nine straight games. If Masoli doesn’t appeal to you, then spend the full $14,000 on Reilly, who comes into Week 20 having thrown at least two majors in five of the last six weeks and has a puncher’s chance to hit 6,000 passing yards.

If Winnipeg’s Matt Nichols ($8,597) is indeed out for the Bombers’ game against the Stampeders, his loss could have a ripple effect on the offence. Andrew Harris ($6,996), who has struggled the last month, will have to carry the load if either Dominique Davis ($5,000) or Dan LeFevour ($5,000) gets the start, while receiver Weston Dressler ($4,640) will also need to prop up a pass-catching corps that is missing both Darvin Adams and Timothy Flanders. Harris, who also left last week’s loss to the Lions with an injury, will be a tough call for Fantasy players.

C.J. Gable is a duel threat out of the backfield for the Edmonton Eskimos (Johany Jutras/CFL.ca)

Edmonton is now awash with strong Fantasy options now that running back C.J. Gable ($8,081) is healthy and giving the Eskimos a dual threat out of the backfield. His presence has made Brandon Zylstra ($8,360) the league’s best Fantasy receiver, while Derel Walker ($5,743) and the resurgent Adarius Bowman ($4,905) are each strong WR1/WR2 plays as they take on the Roughriders. Even Vidal Hazelton ($4,663) brings a level of Fantasy value as Reilly gets to pick his poison from among the top-shelf talent to get involved.

Masoli’s success has come from the late-season surge of his receiving corps, led by the explosive Brandon Banks ($8,142), who has five straight games of over 100 yards, including last week’s 193 yards and two touchdowns on 13 catches. Jalen Saunders ($4,819) quietly reached 1,000 yards, while Luke Tasker ($5,885) is only three receptions away from 100 on the season. Banks is definitely a WR1, while Saunders is a borderline WR1 and Tasker is a top-end WR2.

Gable and Toronto’s James Wilder ($7082) anchor the list of running backs this week. Jerome Messam has been quiet of late but could also be a bargain of sorts if Fantasy players are willing to bank on his $4886 salary. Coming off consecutive games of at least 200 all-purpose yards, BC’s Chris Rainey has strong value at $6891 and should be considered if the Lions continue to reduce the touches of Jeremiah Johnson ($6887), who was not involved at all in last week’s win. Saskatchewan will be without both Cameron Marshall ($5750) and Trent Richardson ($2500), leaving Marcus Thigpen ($2500) as the possible lead back for the Roughriders. Greg Morris ($2500) and perhaps return specialist Christion Jones ($2614) could also see touches.

Calgary remains the top Fantasy defence at $6,300, yet Fantasy owners should look at Hamilton’s unit, which gets Montreal. The Ticats ($4,214) have vastly improved since their 0-8 start, while Winnipeg’s D ($5,069) has sleeper potential against a Stamps offence that has been unable to show consistency through much of the second half of the season.
