RotoExperts: Division Final Fantasy Rankings

Patrick Doyle/CFL.ca

Sure, the question remains about whether Mike Reilly is worth $14,000 (yes), yet the biggest question entering Division Finals weekend is whether Marcus Thigpen is worthy of a roster spot. Thigpen rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown in Saskatchewan’s win over Ottawa last weekend, earning 24.4 Fantasy points. However, the question lingering over the Roughriders’ running back will be if either Cameron Marshall ($5,394) and/or Trent Richardson ($4,000) will return to the roster for Sunday’s matchup against the Argonauts.

For now, we suggest keeping Thigpen in play as he does have the hot hand in the Saskatchewan backfield, yet Edmonton’s C.J. Gable ($8,367) and Toronto’s James Wilder ($7,935) are the backs of choice this weekend. Gable ran for 106 yards and pair of scores in Sunday’s West Semi-Final win over Winnipeg, while Wilder, a Rookie of the Year finalist, finished fifth in the league in rushing despite the fact he didn’t gain the starting job for good until Week 13.

Calgary’s Jerome Messam ($4,275) could be a bargain if the Stampeders make him the focal point of the offence, while teammate Roy Finch ($4,477) has the potential to deliver Fantasy points at a high volume without even touching the ball from scrimmage.

Ray and the Argos will be well rested to take on the Riders after a bye to the Eastern Finals (Johany Jutras/Argos)

The majority of Fantasy owners will go toward Reilly or Toronto’s Ricky Ray ($10,158) at pivot, as both have the ability and the receiving corps to exceed 20 Fantasy points. Saskatchewan’s Kevin Glenn ($6,579) looked sharp in the East Semi-Final win over Ottawa, but will have to keep his momentum going forward against Toronto. Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell ($7,912) wasn’t the high-scoring quarterback he was during last season’s Most Outstanding Player campaign, yet he’s capable of rewarding Fantasy owners with a vintage effort, one he might need if the Eskimos’ run defence steps up to slow down Messam.

Receiver is deep with talent, headlined by Eskimos wideout Brandon Zylstra ($7,944) and Argos playmaker S.J. Green ($6,151). All four teams playing this weekend sport top-flight receiving corps, making the depth at the position stronger than it was last weekend. With Rookie of the Year candidate Marken Michel ($4,112) returning from injury and Marquay McDaniel ($4,003) also set to return, the Stamps’ receiving unit makes Mitchell a potential sleeper. Toronto’s Armanti Edwards ($3,994) and Anthony Coombs ($2,721) are each flying under the radar.

On the defensive side of things, Calgary’s unit carries the top salary at $5,605, while Saskatchewan ($5,156) is second. Going all-in on either Reilly or Ray would most likely mean Fantasy owners who did so would be looking at higher-risk defences in Toronto ($3,788) or Edmonton ($3,711).
