Esks finalize 2018 coaching staff, including 3 additions

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Eskimos have finalized their 2018 coaching staff, led by Head Coach Jason Maas.

The staff includes three off-season additions, with DJ McCarthy, Travis Brown and Kelly Bates joining the club. The Eskimos also announced Kyle Thorne has joined the Green and Gold as director of human performance.

Last year the Eskimos finished 12-6, coming within four points of appearing in the Grey Cup following a close loss to Calgary in the Western Final. Since then, the biggest change to the staff has been the departure of Carson Walch, with Maas taking over offensive coordinator duties in Walch’s absence.

The entire staff for 2018:
• Jason Maas – Head Coach/Offensive Coordinator
• Mike Benevides – Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator/Linebackers
• Mike Gibson – Offensive Line/Run Game Coordinator
• Jordan Maksymic – Quarterbacks/Pass Game Coordinator
• Cory McDiarmid – Special Teams Coordinator
• Tim Prinsen – Running Backs
• DJ McCarthy – Wide Receivers
• Barron Miles – Defensive Backs and Player Development
• Demetrious Maxie – Defensive Line
• Travis Brown – Linebackers Assistant
• Dave Jackson – Special Teams Assistant
• Kelly Bates – Offensive Quality Control
• Rob Payne – Defensive Quality Control

Changes from last season:
• Jason Maas will serve as offensive coordinator once again in addition to his role as head coach.
• Assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Mike Benevides adds linebackers to his duties.
• Demetrious Maxie moves from linebackers coach to defensive line coach.
• Jordan Maksymic adds pass game coordinator to his duties.

New to the Eskimos coaching staff for 2018:
• DJ McMcarthy will serve as wide receivers coach.
• Travis Brown will serve as the assistant linebackers coach.
• Kelly Bates will serve as offensive quality control.
