What Type Of Football Fan Is Your Mom?

Mother’s day is here and today I am thinking of all the CFL mommas out there! Today is about YOU and my wish is that you’re feeling enveloped in love by those who appreciate, adore and need you. While today is Mother’s Day and you may be a) spoiled or b) spoiling a mother or mother figure in your life here at CFL HQ we are doing the same but we also have an eye on tomorrow. Tomorrow, May 14th marks ONE MONTH until CFL Kickoff in Winnipeg!!! Yes, we are freaking out with excitement and know you are too and cannot wait to welcome fans to stadium and viewers to TSN. That got us thinking about all of you but in honour of today we have our minds on the great moms across the CFL.

#1 The Lifelong Fan Mom

These are the moms who grew up on CFL football but love it as much (maybe a little more?) today!  The start of the season brings with it memories of dinner in front of the game, sitting in the bleachers bundled up, and the Grey Cup as mandatory viewing usually in the form of a neighbourhood or family party.  The nostalgia runs deep but the love of the game is #1.

#2 The Encyclopedia Mom

You know this mom because she’s the one you’re always texting questions to because she just freakin knows it all! Yes, she loves the game but she takes total pride in knowing stats, figures and facts. When you sound smart talking about the game it’s because she’s fed you the info.

#3 The Never Miss A Cup Mom

Oh we see you Grey Cup moms! Whether she is flying cross country to be there in person or has a spread organized for a group of friends the Grey Cup is appointment viewing and cannot be missed. Does it matter which teams are playing? Heck no! We know this mom and our team loves to reconnect with her every year at the Grey Cup!

#4 The Part Of The Team Mom

Whether she currently or previously worked in the front office, team doctor or trainer, helps out for gameday or events,  cheerleader or Ms. Grey Cup, football operations or support staff this mom is part of the crew! These moms tend to have the best B.T.S stories…you know the things we aren’t all privy to.  Ask them for some stories this Mother’s Day…and then feel free to DM me your best findings!

#5 The Playbook Mom

Don’t even bother talking to her during the game because this woman is laser focused. She’s not much of a cheerer, she doesn’t miss a play – correction she doesn’t miss a thing. A guy is lined up differently? A defence has suddenly switched from man to zone, she knows – what you didn’t?

#6 The I’ve Got Plans Mom

June 14 – November 25th she’s got plans…primarily on the weekends. This is the woman who watches a TON of football. Of course she isn’t missing her team’s games but there’s a good chance she’s also tuning in for a few other key matchups. Probably check the schedule before you try and make plans with her because…if her team is playing she ain’t got time for you.

#7 The Memorabilia Mom

Packages arriving at the door from Etsy, Kijiji, Ebay at an alarming rate? Has the hutch in the dining room turned into a shrine of sorts? Is the basement less of a family space and more of a football haven – you know this is your mom! Yes, there’s the classic jersey and t-shirt, the mom who loves a good rip through the team store but then there are the ones who go above and beyond. I still have my Riders sink plug if anyone is looking for a belated gift for the woman who has everything.

#8 The He’s My Guy Mom

It doesn’t matter that he played for her team 3 years ago – he’s her guy! She follows her favourite team sure, but if there’s a conflict she’s probabbbly watching the game her favourite player who is undoubtedly dominating. She never understood why the team got rid of him and just look at what they gave up!?

#9 The My Kids Play And I’m Obsessed Mom

She may not have started off as an all-in football fan but after watching her kids play for years this mom knows her playbook. She has learned the game in a new way, loves the game and is completely invested. She’s either still watching her kiddos play or she watches the CFL nostalgic for the bleachers on cool fall afternoons. These are some of the moms making dreams come true.

#10 The May As Well Be A Bird Mom

She’s got Twitter open on her laptop…she’s also refreshing on her phone. She has a snarky reply, pun, gif word of encouragement and chirp ready at all times – she’s the Twitter mom. I see you ladies out there starting the conversation, lifting players/coaches up, commenting on a play and getting loud when it matters. It’s bad a** and I love it.

#11 The Bandwagon Mom

This is the mom who maybbbbbe isn’t watching in the dog days of summer but you know that when rivalry games, playoff games and when things start heating up down the stretch she is ALL IN! She’s got her favourite team and she watches now and then, watches the recaps, knows what’s going on but when it comes to games that matter – she’s swagged out and ready to watch some football!

#12 The Their Still In It Mom

We know that anything can happen in the CFL (trust me, we do) but this mom is the eternal optimist. She’s cheering to the bitter end, always doing the math on how her team can pull ahead. There’s always a way, anything can happen, they’ve got more left in them, there’s plenty of time, they know how to win…you know this person.

#13 The Huddle Up Mom

This is the momma who takes her love of the game onto the field! She’s the star of her tackle/flag football team and football isn’t just a pastime it’s a way of life, passion, hobby and network. Appreciate these women who are helping keep football culture rich and diverse across our country.

We know there are MANY more and we at the Canadian Football League are wishing all of you a perfect Mother’s Day! We cannot wait to see you this season.

And to my momma – thank you for encouraging my love of this game and proving that through hard work and staying true to values anything is possible.
