Week 1 Fantasy Recap: Reilly and Walker top the charts

Trevor Hagen/CFL.ca

Investing in the Eskimos duo of Mike Reilly and Derel Walker required a huge chunk of the $40,000 salary cap in TSN Fantasy Football, yet those who did so in Week 1 received more than enough bang for their Fantasy bucks.

Reilly (34.6 ) and Walker (31.2) had the two highest scores in the regular season opener, combining for 65.8 Fantasy points in Edmonton’s win over Winnipeg. The combo teamed up for eight completions for 176 yards that included a 101-yard touchdown connection that marked the first points of the 2018 season. They also happened to be two of only three players to score better than 20 Fantasy points in Week 1.

Surprisingly, only 2,617 Fantasy players selected Reilly this past week, as Calgary’s Bo Levi Mitchell was the most-used Week 1 pivot with 9,333 players choosing Mitchell, who finished with 15.1 Fantasy Points. BC’s Jonathon Jennings delivered for the 3,823 players who rolled with the Lions dual-threat, putting up 21 FP in the win over Montreal.

Winnipeg’s Chris Streveler, who had 18.1 FP in his professional debut against Edmonton, had only 713 Fantasy players who bought in on the Bombers rookie.

Argos quarterback Ricky Ray was a disappointment for the 2,369 people who invested in him. The Toronto field general managed 8.1 FP as he failed to throw a touchdown, a feat he managed only twice in 2017. Among the Week 1 starting quarterbacks, Montreal’s Drew Willy had the fewest users, with only 115 Fantasy players benefiting from the 14.2 Fantasy Points he produced in the loss at BC. Hamilton’s Jeremiah Masoli also did not have a lot of Fantasy support in Week 1, as just 782 players finished the week with the 19 FP the Tiger-Cats starter put up in the loss at the Stampeders.

Fantasy players loved Saskatchewan’s Jerome Messam, with 10,737 placing him in their respective lineups. Messam came through with 10.2 Fantasy Points, putting him in the upper tier when it came to Fantasy production among running backs. Calgary’s Don Jackson lived up to his bargain salary of $2,500, leading all backs with 16.7 FP, yet only 331 players plugged him into their rosters.

Montreal’s Tyrell Sutton (3,936 players) had 14.6 Fantasy Points, while Toronto’s James Wilder Jr. (4,982) recorded 12.4 FP. Toronto’s Declan Cross (238) had 11 FP, just behind the 11.3 FP of Winnipeg’s Andrew Harris, who had 7,144 players sign up for his services. BC’s Chris Rainey rounded out the group of double-digit backs with 10.8 FP.

Receiver was loaded with good production. Beyond Walker, Hamilton’s Jalen Saunders (583 players) put up 18.8 Fantasy Points with Bombers standout Weston Dressler (1,035) putting up 18.4 FP, Calgary’s Kamar Jorden (2,186) recorded 17.7 FP while Montreal’s Chris Williams (616) had 15.8 FP. Winnipeg’s Darvin Adams (929) had 13.6 Fantasy Points, with Hamilton’s Luke Tasker (2,516) finishing with 13.1 FP while BC’s Shaquille Johnson had 12.6 FP despite just 221 players using him, and Saskatchewan’s Naaman Roosevelt (4,944) put up 12 Fantasy Points.

Calgary’s Marken Michel (575) had 11.7 FP, while Toronto’s Armanti Edwards (780) had 10.5 FP with teammate S.J. Green delivering 10.1 FP for the 5,645 players who selected him.

Montreal’s Ernest Jackson (1,675) had 10.3 FP, just behind teammate Eugene Lewis’ 10.6. Lewis had just 28 players choose him, the lowest number among anyone who had double-digit points this week.
