MONTREAL — The Alouettes are back at practice following a huge road win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.  With a home date with the Ottawa REDBLACKS looming, early indications are that the team may turn to backup quarterback Jeff Mathews as they await the status of Drew Willy.

According to Didier Ormejuste of RDS, Mathews took the majority of first team reps at Tuesday’s practice while Willy did not participate.

Willy left the game in the third quarter and was seen jogging to the locker room under his own power for further evaluation. He threw for 157 yards on 8-of-15 passing attempts along with 12 rushing yards.

Mathews entered and helped hold off the Riders as he completed 8 of 12 passes for 98 yards in just over a quarter-and-a-half of work.

The former Argos and Tiger-Cats quarterback joined Montreal towards the end of training camp last month.

Mathews was signed as a free agent on February 14, 2017 by the Argos, and dressed in four games, starting one in 2017 with the Argos. The three-year CFL veteran threw for 67 yards on 8-of-12 passing in his lone start with the Double Blue.
