CFL Fantasy Podcast, Week 9: The ageless Travis Lulay

TORONTO — It’s been seven years since Travis Lulay reached the highest peak of the Canadian Football League mountain, winning a Grey Cup and being named Most Outstanding Player in the same month.

At age 34 and coming off a torn ACL that ended his 2017 season, Lulay is turning back the clock for the Lions, putting together three straight solid performances since returning from the sideline.

The veteran quarterback has clearly made the BC Lions a better team, but is he worth serious consideration in CFL Fantasy?

“What I saw from him against the best defence on the planet right now was really, really encouraging,” said Pat Steinberg. “To me the greatest barometer is going up against the Stamps defence. He was willing to extend plays and make accurate throws on the run. He was good in the pocket. He made some real nice touch passes to get over some good DBs in that Calgary secondary.

“Lulay is a guy that, if you’re looking to cash in with some of the other big-name running backs and receivers, can help your lineup.”

While Lulay could be an effective choice in the quarterback spot, he’s also had a strong impact on the playmakers around him in the Lions’ offence. Ricky Collins, Bryan Burnham and Emmanuel Arceneaux have emerged as consistent threats since Lulay’s return, making them intriguing plays given their relatively low salaries.

“I think there’s a lot of value there,” argued Krever. “All those WR1 candidates — why not Manny Arceneaux? I think he can be in that discussion.

“His value took a big hit with his struggles out of the gate. We’re going to see him continue to put up numbers and his value’s going to go up. I wouldn’t be shocked if, in the next few weeks, one of Burnham or Arceneaux enters that WR1 conversation.”
