REGINA – It was a complete team win for the Saskatchewan Roughriders, who put their foot on the gas on their opening possession and never let up in Sunday night’s win over the Calgary Stampeders.
The Riders scored touchdowns on offence, defence and special teams, never letting Bo Levi Mitchell find any consistent groove or letting the Stamps build enough momentum to mount a comeback.
Although Mitchell did finish the game with four touchdown passes, the defence did a good job of keeping him out of sync all game, knocking him down with five sacks. The Stamps offence managed just 90 yards in the first half.
“We did a pretty good job, we had one turnover offensively. Total team effort, defence was amazing,” said Zach Collaros. “Offensively we were able to sustain some drives, moving forward, scoring touchdowns, beating an undefeated team, a team coming into this game as the best in the league, we’ll take it… It’s another win for us and we get to continue down that path of where we want to go.”
Collaros finished the game with 270 passing yards on 25-of-34 attempts. But it was perhaps receiver Jordan Williams-Lambert who stole the show offensively, ending the game with 152 yards on 10 receptions. It was the first time a Riders receiver had a game with over 100 receiving yards this season.
“It’s like any connection I have with those guys. They all work their tails off during the week. It just so happens the ball has been thrown his way often the last couple weeks. He’s an unbelievable hands catcher… When he gets an opportunity, he makes the most of it.”
“Zach’s a great guy, a great quarterback,” said Williams-Lambert. “He brings a lot of leadership to the group and I just try to make his job easier and he does the same for me.”
The win moves the Riders to 4-4 as the team gets set for a crucial West Division matchup with the BC Lions next week.
