Upsets Galore: #TotalPickEm Week 10 Recap

Week 10 was not a good week for the vast majority of #TotalPickEm players.

Between the upsets that played out in Winnipeg and Regina, a lot of people lost significant points.

Atop the global standings — reminder: There’s a $5,000 end-of-season grand prize — is burzmiester5, who went a respectable 2-for-4 in a difficult week. The Esks fan did sadly say goodbye to his three-week perfection streak.

Let’s take a look at how the week shook down.

Friday | Ottawa 44, Winnipeg 21

The REDBLACKS and Bombers opened Week 10 at IGF, and virtually everybody took the Bombers.

Needless to say that didn’t pan out well: Trevor Harris, William Powell and co. came to ball, and the REDBLACKS moved to 6-3 on the year

Ottawa enters a bye week, while Winnipeg will visit the 7-1 Stampeders in Week 11.

Despite throwing eight touchdowns in his last four games, Bombers QB Matt Nichols has his critics — and they are growing louder.

The REDBLACKS are an unpredictable group, but are they ever fun to watch when they hit their stride.

Saturday | Toronto 24, BC 23

The Argos hosted BC in front of their largest crowd of the season, and rewarded the rowdy home crowd with a victory over a surging Lions team.

McLeod Bethel-Thompson, creatively nicknamed ‘Macbeth’, is now 2-0 as a starter, while the BC Lions are 0-5 away from BC Place.

The Argos are rolling, and with a trio of divisional games ahead — at Montreal, then a home-and-away with Hamilton — Toronto could be primed for a push to .500.

BC, meanwhile, has three of its next four at home, so there is hope for Wally Buono’s group.

Saturday | Edmonton 40, Montreal 24

The Alouettes headed west to face the Eskimos, and the game went ahead as planned after concerns earlier in the week about wildfire smoke.

The Esks’ passing game proved to be too much for the plucky visitors, as Jason Maas’s team sprinted to a comfortable victory.

Montreal’s offence looked somewhat potent with second-year pro Antonio Pipkin at the controls, and were it not for a few drops could have put up more than 24 points — season-high production as it stood for the Alouettes.

Edmonton is a team that should be favoured next week against Hamilton; Mike Sherman’s Als are to be avoided at all costs, at least until their defence stops giving up 40-plus points per night.

Sunday | Saskatchewan 40, Calgary 27

Week 10 went out with a bang, as the Riders hosted Calgary in a classic West Division matchup at a sold-out Mosaic Stadium.

Saskatchewan stunned Calgary and the rest of the league with a confident performance from start to finish.

Zach Collaros looked poised under centre, showing flashes of the Collaros of old, while the Stampeder offence — down a top receiver and star running back, granted — was largely kept in check.

Calgary is still the best team in the league at 7-1, but the Riders showed they might be capable of a strong push in the second half for home-field.

Week 10: 1-3

Overall: 23-15 (.605)
