Pick’ Em Marquee Matchup: Sparks will fly in Battle of Alberta

CALGARY — The two top teams in the CFL’s West Division collide in Week 12’s Pick ‘Em Marquee Matchup, as the Edmonton Eskimos travel down to Calgary for a tussle with the Stampeders.

Passions often run high whenever the Battle of Alberta reignites, and this Monday’s Mark’s Labour Day Weekend showdown at McMahon Stadium will be no different.

The Stampeders reasserted their dominance with a strong second-half performance against Winnipeg last week, and have a defence that can flat out ball. At 8-1, Calgary has a relatively clean bill of health and clear sense of what its team identity is.

Edmonton, on the other hand, sits at 6-4 in spite of itself: Jason Maas’s team shot itself in the foot repeatedly with penalties during the first half of the season, but still sits second in the West.

Monday marks the first game of a home-and-home series between the two clubs, and it’s one which could define both of their seasons.

Two Calgary wins would all but seal the West Division for the Stamps; two Edmonton wins — as unlikely as that may seem — would shake the entire power balance in the West Division.

Writer Chris O’Leary is going against the grain by picking Edmonton, but the rest of our CFL.ca writers are unanimous in their support of the Stamps at home.
