Campus Roundup: Hello, Calgary

It was one-way traffic at McMahon Stadium as the UC Dinos rolled over the UBC Thunderbirds. (David Moll/UC Dinos photo)

Week 3 in U SPORTS football brought a whole lot of entertainment to the university football table, as games went down to the wire and ridiculous plays popped up across the country.

The most stunning of the games took place in Montreal, where the Concordia Stingers earned their first win of the season with a dramatic last-second 22-20 win.

In Canada West play, the Saskatchewan Huskies used a big fourth-quarter pick-six — yes, there were three ‘Saskatchewan’ pick-sixes at IGF this weekend — to edge the Manitoba Bisons 48-46.

In Ontario, meanwhile, Guelph receiver Kian Schaffer-Baker made the early candidate for catch of the university season; the Gryphons ultimately fell 12-10 to uOttawa, but that catch will live on forever.

The single largest story of the week, however, was out west where the No.-5 Calgary Dinos hammered the No.-6 UBC Thunderbirds 57-7.

It was the largest margin of victory thus far in 2018; Calgary QB Adam Sinagra threw for five touchdowns, freshman receiver Tyson Philpot hauled in 186 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns, and the Dinos defence held UBC under 300 yards of offence.

It all played out in front of a solid crowd pushing 6,000 at McMahon Stadium, and sets up a tasty rematch on the Pacific coast in two weeks’ time.

A four-for-four week for Argos receiver and Manitoba alum Anthony Coombs has propelled him into first place in the #UniversityBlitz competition. Week 4 will split the panel even further, with a number of tough-to-call matchups.

Hot: The Calgary Dinos are making a strong push to move up the U SPORTS Top 10; senior quarterback Adam Sinagra is averaging an insane 408 yards-per-game, and the Dinos have beaten two of their three toughest conference opponents already in Regina and UBC. Could this finally be the year UC gets over the hump and lifts its first Vanier Cup since 1995?

Cold: The Sherbrooke Vert et Or led for 59 minutes in Montreal, and ultimately came up short against a Concordia team they will likely be competing with for the final RSEQ playoff spot. Sherbrooke is 0-3, with three games remaining against the conference powerhouses (home-and-away with Montreal, one at Laval): Barring a miracle, a playoff berth seems all but impossible now for the Vert et Or.
