Alouettes name Johnny Manziel Week 15 starter

MONTREAL — Johnny Manziel will be the Montreal Alouettes’ starting quarterback on Friday night when they take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Als head coach Mike Sherman revealed the news following Monday’s practice, after Manziel handled first-team reps ahead of previous starter Antonio Pipkin.

Pipkin has started the last four games for Als, taking the reins following an injury to Manziel, who was put through concussion protocol back in August. However, last week, Pipkin was intercepted four times, throwing for 95 yards on 11-of-22 passing in a loss to the BC Lions.

Manziel, in his first CFL season, has started two games and gone 27-of-46 for 272 yards and four interceptions, all of them coming in his debut against the Ticats.

He was acquired by the Alouettes in a blockbuster deal that saw two first round picks, Jamaal Westerman and Chris Williams go the other way.

The Alouettes visit the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday night at Investors Group Field, where they’ll look to bounce back and improve on their 3-9 record.
