Campus Roundup: Salut, Montreal

If there were any seeds of doubt about the hegemony of the Quebec conference’s two top teams, it was put to bed when No. 4 Montreal (then-record: 2-1) hammered Concordia (then-record: 2-1) by a 74-3 scoreline on Saturday. National No. 2 Laval then smoked McGill 53-7 on Sunday, for good measure.

Meanwhile, any idea that Waterloo has suddenly made the jump to the OUA’s top tier was obliterated by No. 1 Western’s 67-7 win over the Warriors in London.

There were pick-sixes galore in Ontario, as the Ottawa Gee-Gees hauled in a pair in a 42-16 win over York and the McMaster Marauders snagged a key one in a shock 21-20 win over No. 5 Laurier.

Out west, the No. 9 Saskatchewan Huskies earned a decisive 33-20 victory over the visiting No. 8 Regina Rams in a battle for provincial bragging rights.

In the maritimes, Saint Mary’s took a massive step towards locking up a home playoff game in the AUS with a 26-16 win over Acadia. At 4-0, the Huskies are now two games clear of the Axemen (2-2), with St. FX (3-1) the only other teams close to them.

A 3-1 week has Toronto Argonauts receiver Anthony Coombs two games ahead of the rest of the pack.

Who’s Hot: It’s the obvious pick, but the No. 1 Western Mustangs absolutely ran over what had been a surging Waterloo team. Greg Marshall’s UWO squad outgained its visitors 602-279, and is now firmly in the driver’s seat to win the conference. Though a tricky second half — at Queen’s (3-2), at Ottawa (3-1) and vs. Laurier (2-2) are still on the schedule — awaits, it looks like Western is well on its way to a second-straight Yates Cup.

Who’s Not: The unranked UBC Thunderbirds continued their disappointing start to the season with a 32-28 homecoming loss at the hands of the No. 3 Calgary Dinos in Vancouver on Saturday night. Blake Nill’s T-Birds blew a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, and at 1-3 shockingly sit outside the playoffs. UBC still has two games left against last-place Alberta (0-4), so they should be OK, but it’s been an undeniably poor first half of the season on the west coast.
