The hashtag #CFL500K has been popping up on our Twitter timeline throughout the month of January, and we were curious: What is it? What does it stand for?
It started off with Riders fan Stephen Safinuk tweeting out a challenge.
Got @balaneski joining the 500Km of running/walking in 2019. Anyone else wanna join in the fun? #CFL500K seems like a fun hashtag. More people will help keep me honest!

Now, 500 km sounds like a lot — but spread out over 365 days, it’s a manageable average of just 1.37 km/day.
Fellow fans have jumped on the hashtag, and begun posting their own progress.

Weekly total of extra Km’s walking / running.
7.40 km.
15.44 km ytd
484 km remaining!!! @Safimod #CFL500K pic.twitter.com/nCYXJJnyX6— Trev 🇨🇦 (@trevf66) January 27, 2019
The beauty is that even though January is nearly in the rearview mirror, it’s still not too late to hop onboard; with 334 days remaining in the calendar year, you’d still only need 1.5 km/day to be on-track for the #CFL500K in 2019.
It’s a fun initiative, and obviously fans can play with the target numbers and means of getting there. 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️
Credit to Stephen Safinuk for firing up the hashtag, and everybody who has participated so far!
