Quarterback Index: Lulay turning back the clock

Johany Jutras/CFL.ca

The CFL.ca Quarterback Index is a weekly power ranking of quarterbacks across the CFL. The ranking reflects recent performance, historical value, statistical indicators, team success and overall on-field evaluation.

TORONTO — As though we went back in time — to the year 2011, specifically — Travis Lulay is playing like one of the CFL’s top quarterbacks.

Lulay is on his way up in the QB Index after two straight weeks of 400-plus yards totaling 840 through the air, although he’s not without competition. While the Lions’ quarterback leapfrogged Kevin Glenn and Matt Nichols, two great performances weren’t enough to move him past Trevor Harris.

More in this week’s CFL.ca Quarterback Index:

MIKE REILLY EDM
THIS WEEK: 1 | LAST WEEK: 1

The Eskimos’ field general enjoyed his finest outing of 2017 in Week 5, throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns while leading his team on a last-minute game-winning scoring drive. Reilly deserves plenty of credit for the Eskimos’ 4-0 start, which has come despite an avalanche of key injuries.

BO LEVI MITCHELL CGY
THIS WEEK: 2 | LAST WEEK: 2

A week after the Stamps lost to Montreal, Mitchell was held to 253 yards in a win over the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Still, the reigning MOP is the CFL’s third-leading passer while the Stamps are in a position to fight for another West Division Championship. Mitchell and Reilly are as good as it gets.

RICKY RAY TOR
THIS WEEK: 3 | LAST WEEK: 3

There’s little doubt that if Ricky Ray can stay healthy, he’ll lead the CFL in passing yards. Ray’s 228 passing attempts over five contests (45.6 per game) are by far the most in the league. So far, the 37-year-old has been up to the task in Marc Trestman’s offence, leading the Argos to 3-2 record and first in the East.

TREVOR HARRIS OTT
THIS WEEK: 4 | LAST WEEK: 4

Trevor Harris enjoyed varying degrees of success in a busy Week 5, opening shop with a win and an impressive 376 passing yards vs. the Als before struggling in a loss to the Argos. At this time, Harris’ hold on the four spot is tenuous at best.

TRAVIS LULAY BC
THIS WEEK: 5 | LAST WEEK: 7

A quarterback controversy brewing in Vancouver? Jonathon Jennings‘ job could be in danger as Lulay continues to light up the scoreboard. The Lions have scored 86 points over the last two weeks in wins over Winnipeg and Hamilton while Lulay notched his third- and fourth-career 400-yard games.

MATT NICHOLS WPG
THIS WEEK: 6 | LAST WEEK: 5

The up and down Matt Nichols continues to be just that in the rankings. This week he’s down again after being out-dueled in a shootout loss to BC, which included a late-game interception that led to Ty Long‘s game-winning field goal soon after.

KEVIN GLENN SSK
THIS WEEK: 7 | LAST WEEK: 6

Kevin Glenn was not at his best in a Week 5 loss to the Stamps, failing to find the end zone while accumulating only 203 yards. He’ll look to bounce back in a head to head with another ageless veteran in Ricky Ray at the new Mosaic Stadium.

DARIAN DURANT MTL
THIS WEEK: 8 | LAST WEEK: 9

Durant’s 452 yards marked his highest total since he went off for 500 against Calgary on Sept. 17, 2010. The Als’ offence has shown marked improvement this season and if not for five turnovers, probably would have gotten the win over the REDBLACKS.

ZACH COLLAROS HAM
THIS WEEK: 9 | LAST WEEK: 8

Collaros and the ‘Cats led every minute of last week’s game except for the last one. A heartbreaker leaves the Tabbies looking for win No. 1 of 2017 and it hasn’t been pretty for their quarterback, who’s completed 62 per cent of his passes and found the end zone only three times.

INJURED RESERVE

JONATHON JENNINGS BC
THIS WEEK: IR | LAST WEEK: IR

Word out of Vancouver is Travis Lulay will start in Week 6 while Jonathon Jennings could dress as a backup. What happens after that is anyone’s guess as the Lions have arguably the CFL’s top quarterback tandem.
