Quote Board: 3 statements that stood out in reaction to Franklin trade

TORONTO — Few times do we get to say that a trade benefits both sides but without looking too far ahead, we may be able to apply that to Monday’s trade between Toronto and Edmonton.

Although it was somewhat surprising, the trade of James Franklin to the Argonauts gave Toronto and exclusive negotiating window with the 26-year-old pivot ahead of the February 13th free agency deadline and the Eskimos get value back for a player that was likely to leave Edmonton.

After a day of reaction, here are three statements that stand out from general managers of both clubs:

1. Franklin was as good as gone in Edmonton

Eskimos GM Brock Sunderland confirmed that he knew as early as his club’s exit interviews that James Franklin’s days in Edmonton were done and the move was strictly to get something in return for a marquee free agent that would have walked.

He pointedly says that the Esks already hold the league’s Most Outstanding Player in Mike Reilly and if Franklin wants to compete for a starting job he wouldn’t be doing so in Edmonton.

2. The starting QB job in Toronto is Ricky Ray’s to lose (or relinquish)

Jim Popp is not confirming whether or not Ricky Ray will be back next year — as the veteran pivot contemplates retirement — but is setting the narrative early.  Ricky Ray hasn’t decided on his future but should he return next year he will do so as the starter.

In an interview with CFL.ca’s Chris O’Leary, Popp did say that Franklin would have an opportunity to compete to out-play Ray for the starting spot.

3. Franklin is likely the future in Toronto but negotiations are pending

The plan is indeed for the Argos to make Franklin their quarterback of the future but there is still a lot to be done before that ever happens.  On top of the mystery surrounding Ricky Ray’s status, the Argos still have to enter with negotiations with Franklin and his agent.

Popp said that the two camps have spoken and both are excited for the opportunity.
